Second printing of the Second edition (first printing was 1813) and the last edition by William Faden. A New York edition was published in 1813 (see Sabin 85204 and Karpinski 17, 22). Outline color. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with two paste down labels on the end sheet reading "Sold by W. Faden Geographer to His Majesty and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, No. 5 Charing Cross." and "... The John Crerar Library Chicago. 1894. E.D. French sc. 1896". Huge map of Quebec District extending from Lake St. Peter to the District of Gaspe with a large inset map of the Gaspe Peninsula. With five views that are the same views used in the author's 1815 Map of Lower Canada, from which this 18321 map is derived. See notes to the 1831 Map of the District of Montreal. Dissected into three sheets, the central sheet into 25 sections, and the western and eastern sheet each into 20 sections. Outline color. Map sheets fold with green end papers each respectively labeled "Central", "West" and "East" in ms on bookplates reading "Jas. Wyld (Successor to Mr. Faden) Geographer To Her Majesty. Charing Cross, East ..." Outer slip case is full green leather 26x19.5 with "Quebec 3 Rivers" stamped on the spine in gold. |

Image shows end papers containing a publications list, and outer case with label. Later edition of the Smyth map of 1800. This map was originally published by David William Smyth in 1800 and went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154 and Winearls listing). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). Catalogue of Wyld's publications on paste down on the end sheets. See Map Collector 55, p32, for this map and the Wyld family firm history. With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, mounted on linen with green cloth edging. Folds into a green cloth slip case 21.5x12.5 with a paste down label reading "Upper Canada. Jas. Wyld (Successor to Mr. Faden,) Geographer To Her Majesty. Charing Cross, (East,) 4 Doors from Trafalgar Square ...", also with a small label on the spine printed with "Canada." |
