Map printed without color. Includes view of Pyramid Lake, Upper California, and table of distances. This map was issued with Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" (the book is not present). A later issue of this map appeared in Colton's pocket map titled "Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico & c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" (see our #170). This first issue is distinguished from the second issue by the following differences: On the main map, the second issue has "Printed at Ackerman's rooms 120 Fulton St. N.Y." under the "Entered...." line below the title, the table of distances on the second issue adds "New Orleans to Havana" and "New Orleans (actually the ditto sign ) to Vera Cruz" and drops those miles on the lines in the Gulf of Mexico linking those ports, on the inset map of the Gold Region, the second issue has "Quicksilver Mines" below San Jose instead of "Quicksilver" and the second lists three southern rivers not listed in the first - Stanislaus, Towalumnes, and Acumnes, and finally, in the second issue the decorative border of vines is changed in ways too subtle to list here. None of the prior authorities have noted these differences between the two states. Colton also published a version of this first issue on heavier paper, unfolded with wide margins, and without the lines or distances on them linking the ports of New Orleans, Vera Cruz and Havana, in the Gulf of Mexico, this may be the earliest issue. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Washington, D.C. |

Views, shows Plantations by type, very scarce. In full color, lacks original covers. See our reproduction copy issued by Pelican Press, originally in 1931, and printed by Rand McNally - this reproduction greatly alters the original. Ritzlin catalogue: "Persac was a well known surveyor and landscape painter... the map is quite scarce and normally in poor condition because most copies were used by river pilots to locate plantation landings. Few copies are known in contemporary boards. NUC lists only three copies ... however several copies are located in the south, including one which the Louisiana Supreme Court still uses in land ownership cases." Incredible detail, showing the Plantations on both sides of the river. Four engraved views. Engraved by J.H. Colton. Lacking boards, this copy has some tears at the folds with slight loss at some intersections, some light browning in two areas, but is overall a very good copy. Copies at LSU, Historic New Orleans Collection (504-523-4662). See Antiques Magazine, Nov. 1991 for Persac Article. Norman also published "Norman's New Orleans and Environs" with a map of the city, in 1845 (see our copy). |

1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year. |

There are several editions of this map: The first appears in 1862 (Wheat 1046 - "notably rare") under the title of "New Map of the State of California Exhibiting..." and copyrighted in 1861. The Nevada-Utah border in on the 116th meridian. Then in 1863, another issue appears with the same title, but dated 1863 and copyrighted in 1862. A table of distances is added above the title, and the Nevada-Utah boundary is still on the 116th meridian (Wheat 1070). The next issue is still 1863, same title, but the copyright 1863 (Streeter 2880). Then another 1863 issue with the title as above, but with "A" before "New Map..." and Nagel's name dropped (Wheat 1071 - illustrated p. 77). This issue is discussed at length by Wheat and is called "a Nevada map of first importance." There are many additions in Nevada from the prior issues - Wheat delineates them. Our copy is a variant of Wheat 1071 - there is no "A" in the title, Nagel's name is shown, and there are several erasures of town names and one mining district - Agusta Dist (just below the "V" and "A" of Nevada) had been erased as well. The Humboldt River has also been changed. It is not clear if our issue is earlier or later than the Wheat 1071. In stamped red cloth covers 16x11 with an ad for Maps, etc. on the inside cover, Adrien Gensoul's name pasted over Holt's name. Front cover stamped with "Map Of California And Nevada" in gilt. With four pages of routes and distances. This is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information in Nevada and California. Scale (ca. 1:1,750,000) not 24 miles to an in. as stated on map. |

General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt. |

The main map shows much new county development in the western part of the state as well as a redrawing of many of the rivers in the northwestern part and the upper end of the Rio Grande. The inset map has changed from a rectangle to an oval, still showing the Western States from the Colton U.S. map. This is the earliest issue of this map that we have seen, earlier than any listed in Phillips or Fitzgerald. Compared to our 1876 edition (see #5040) there is far less railroad development shown on the map and the railroads are not listed to the right of the Florida Peninsula, as they are on the 1876 issue. Julius Bien is credited as engraver and printer, which is removed on the 1876 edition. There is no copyright notice. Drew's map is probably the only pocket map of Florida published in Florida in the 19th century. Not much is known about Drew - he is listed on the map as "Bookseller & Stationer" in Jacksonville. Full color by county. Map is folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Drew's New Map Of Florida" in gilt. |
