With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

2nd edition, 1st 1847 issue, without the lower "Road Between Mexico & Vera Cruz" inset but with an upper right inset of "The late Battlefield" (Monterey). The 1st edition was 1846, also without the lower inset (Streeter 3868). The 2nd edition is this copy, almost the same as the 1846 issue (some towns added in Northern Mexico), but dated 1847 (not in Streeter or Wheat). The 3rd edition is dated 1847 and adds the lower inset map mentioned above (Streeter 3869, Wheat Gold 35). A much simpler map than the Map of Texas, Oregon and California of 1846, with no engraver credit. Full color, with Texas outlined in red, folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mexico" in gilt. |

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |

Streeter's copy with his notes in pencil: "An unusually good large scale map..." In green cloth covers with an interesting printed sheet on the inside cover dated June 15, 1856, promoting Whitman and Searl's land business. Three inset views. This was an early map for settlers and speculators. Inset map shows in detail the area around Ft. Riley, "The Geographical Centre of U.S. Possessions." The roads to California, Oregon, and Santa Fe are shown, with 13 Indian reservations taking up about a fifth of the area of the map. This is a very detailed map and very elegant. All the township and range lines completed to date are shown, making this a useful map for locating land claims. Map is folded into stamped green cloth covers 16x10 with "Township Map Of Eastern Kansas" in gold. Indian reservations are indicated by color. |

First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. First edition, first issue of this map. Entered in 1863 and taken from Bancroft's large Map of the Pacific States of 1864, the second edition (first issued in 1863). All of California and Nevada are shown, along with the western parts of Utah and Arizona. A companion map was issued in the same year covering the northern parts of the Pacific States map: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This is the scarcest of the editions of this map. A second issue was published in the same year, with a different border (interlocking leaves as opposed to interlocking Coltonesque metal strips in this copy), with a clean up of various names that were cut off in this first issue along the northern and eastern borders when the plate was extracted from the large map (for instance, "Painted De" for Painted Desert appears at the 35th parallel on the eastern border of Arizona in the first issue and is removed in the second issue) and different labeling of the railroads (see our 4820). Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county. |
