First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. |

An important early guide to the Colorado Gold Region, with three Colton maps on two sheets: "Kansas and Nebraska...1859," which is taken from the 1858 General Atlas, minus the upper half of Nebraska - shows eastern Kansas and Nebraska, "Nebraska and Kanzas, Showing Pikes Peak And The Gold Region...1859," which is the lower half of the 1857 General Atlas map of the same title (without the reference to the Gold Region), and "Military Map of Parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Dakota by Lieut. G.K. Warren Top. Engrs. from the Explorations made by him in 1855, 56 & 57... J.H. Colton... New York," which is derived from the lower half of Warren's 1858/1859 "Military Map of Nebraska and Dakota" (see our #2932). Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt. |

2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map. |

This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures. |

Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county. |

This is a very unusual map for Rand McNally to issue - geological maps were not common in their catalog and this may be the only one they published. It was probably the interest in mining that motivated publication and the inclusion of "Mineralogical References" in the map key. The main source for the geological formations was Hayden's General Geological Map of Colorado that appeared in his 1877 Atlas of Colorado. But Rand McNally's map has much more detail on towns and railroads than Hayden and is a much superior map in that respect. Ellis 82 is the 1880 edition, which was also issued without geological coloring as "Rand McNally & Co.'s New Sectional Map of Colorado." This map is in printed full color, folded into dark blue cloth covers 16.5x10 titled "Rand, McNally & Co's geological and mineralogical maps Of Colorado" in gold. |

This is the third and last issue of this map, published in early 1880. Later in the year, Thayer changed to his version of the Bien / Roeser GLO map (see our #2810). It was first issued in 1878, with a second edition in 1879. Ellis is not fond of this map ("Too much general hachures to show mountains, very few mountain names, towns not too generously supplied, roads not clearly shown, etc.") We find it a very attractive map, however the high degree of hachuring does somewhat limit its clarity. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with purple label reading "Thayer's New Map Of The State Of Colorado. One Dollar." |

A big, wonderful, large scale map of the American west from central Colorado to the coast. Shows all railroads in operation, topographical features and public surveys. It is copyrighted in 1901 with the present title (indicating that it may be the first edition in this form) and in 1893 and 1898 as "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Standard Map of the United States" (suggesting that it may have been derived from a larger map of the entire U.S.). A pocket map version was also made of different parts of this map - see our 1888 Standard Map of California and Nevada, with the scale slightly enlarged. Outline color by state. Dissected into 42 sections. Folds into a new black cloth folding case 29x23 with "Pacific Coast States Rand McNally 1901" stamped in gilt along the spine. |
