Note Wheat and Brun show a 1791 map of different title and smaller size that may have been the precursor of this 1811 map - both are derived from Howell's large map of Pennsylvania, first issued in 1792. This 1811 copy is the first edition in this format, with other editions in 1816 and 1817. Decorative vignettes surround the dedication in the upper right and the title in the lower right. In the lower left corner there is a view of the "Schuylkill permanent Bridge." Colored in outline, backed on thin linen and folded into red half leather marbled covered boards 15x10.

Note First edition. This is a very good map of the state for its period, showing all the town boundaries in the counties, and a lovely "View of Cincinnati" below the title. It is larger than most of the other contemporary pocket maps (Burr, Reed, Mitchell, Tanner) and has better detail. This first edition is not in any references. Folded in 13x9 red leather cover with "Ohio" and decorative border in gilt.

Note Smith considered this to be "the most successful of our maps" and it is indeed a beautiful map and a fine example of early lithography printed by P.S. Duval. Although copyrighted by Robert Pearsal Smith, Ristow states that this map was considered by Smith father, John Jay Smith, to be his own work. There is a view of Girard College and another of Laurel Hill Cemetery in the lower corners of the map engraved by A. Kollner, one of Philadelphia earliest lithographic artists. This copy is from the Kollner collection of Nicholas Biddle Wainwright, who wrote the standard book on Philadelphia lithography and also the authoritative book on Kollner. Map is folded into burgundy leather covers 14x8.5 with "Sidney's Map Of Ten Miles Around Philadelphia" in gilt.

(untitled inset of South America).
List No 0170.001
Note With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label.

Note Map printed without color. Includes view of Pyramid Lake, Upper California, and table of distances. This map was issued with Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" (the book is not present). A later issue of this map appeared in Colton's pocket map titled "Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico & c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" (see our #170). This first issue is distinguished from the second issue by the following differences: On the main map, the second issue has "Printed at Ackerman's rooms 120 Fulton St. N.Y." under the "Entered...." line below the title, the table of distances on the second issue adds "New Orleans to Havana" and "New Orleans (actually the ditto sign ) to Vera Cruz" and drops those miles on the lines in the Gulf of Mexico linking those ports, on the inset map of the Gold Region, the second issue has "Quicksilver Mines" below San Jose instead of "Quicksilver" and the second lists three southern rivers not listed in the first - Stanislaus, Towalumnes, and Acumnes, and finally, in the second issue the decorative border of vines is changed in ways too subtle to list here. None of the prior authorities have noted these differences between the two states. Colton also published a version of this first issue on heavier paper, unfolded with wide margins, and without the lines or distances on them linking the ports of New Orleans, Vera Cruz and Havana, in the Gulf of Mexico, this may be the earliest issue. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Washington, D.C.

Streeter's comments on the map ("This Colton map is almost certainly earlier than the Hunt or the Townsend & Dale maps, both also of 1865, and it is best for giving a general view of the oil region as first opened up and first developed") indicate that he probably had this first issue of 1865 and had not seen the second issue (see our # 4529) which shows more development. Chicago, Ill.
List No 3022.001
Note 1st edition, 1st year of operation for Cram's business. Everything about this map is different from Cram's later productions: it is his first year of operation, at 134 Lake Street, and the style of the cover, the map and the cartouche all have an "early" and unsophisticated look. Charles Shober is listed as Lithographer. Cram also produced the Guide Map to Chicago in 1868 (see our copy). Surviving pre fire maps by Cram are rare. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color. Map is folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 14x9 with "New Township Map Of Iowa" in gilt.

Full Title (Covers to) New map of Boston giving all points of interest ... Geo H. Walker & Co. Lith. 160 Tremont St. Boston. Copyright 1883 by Tilly Haynes. (with map) Bird's eye view of Boston Harbor, engraved expressly for the United States Hotel Company, showing routes of Nantasket Steamer Co.'s boats ... Geo H. Walker & Co. Lith. Boston. Copyright 1884 by Tilly Haynes.
List No 3242A
Note Tilly Haynes was the proprietor of the United States Hotel. He drew both maps. The larger map is titled "New map of Boston giving all points of interest..." The second, somewhat smaller map is "Bird's eye view of Boston Harbor..." The maps and the brochure accompanying have many ads for the U.S. Hotel, which ties in to the fact that they were drawn by the "Resident proprietor" of the Hotel. The maps are very well done. This may be one of the few times that a cartographer managed a hotel. Covers are tan card board with the title "New map of Boston with an extra new map of the harbor. Giving all points of interest or attraction in city, seashore, or suburbs. Revised and corrected for the season. Price 20 Cents. Geo. H. Ellis, Printer, 141 Franklin St., Boston." printed in gold.
