It is dated 1831 under the title - changes from the 1826 Finley issue include the appearance of Chicago, reduction of Arkansas, and the elimination of "Territory" in the title of Michigan. W. Heckrotte has a copy without the 1831 date under the title and with Mitchell's name in slightly different print. It is probably an earlier state. By Tanner's son. Uses Universal Atlas map of Philadelphia. Publications by Tanner's son Henry Jr. are not common. He is listed as publisher of several of H.S. Tanner's works in the early 1840's (see 1842 Traveler's Guide and 1841 "Central States") but this is the only work we have seen where he is the author as well. Excellent 36 page catalogue of "Maps and Geographical Works for sale by H. Tanner, Jun'r. Philadelphia." The works listed are all the H.S. Tanner publications. It appears that Tanner's sons, T.R. Tanner and H. Tanner, Jun'r. divided the business between New York and Philadelphia respectively and took over responsibility for selling H.S. Tanner's products , and others, from 1840 until around 1850. T.R. was in partnership with John Disturnell for a time in the early 1840's (see Tanner and Disturnell). Map and guide are in brown cloth covers 13x8.5 with "Philadelphia City Guide. 1841" stamped in gold. |

Smith considered this to be "the most successful of our maps" and it is indeed a beautiful map and a fine example of early lithography printed by P.S. Duval. Although copyrighted by Robert Pearsal Smith, Ristow states that this map was considered by Smith father, John Jay Smith, to be his own work. There is a view of Girard College and another of Laurel Hill Cemetery in the lower corners of the map engraved by A. Kollner, one of Philadelphia earliest lithographic artists. This copy is from the Kollner collection of Nicholas Biddle Wainwright, who wrote the standard book on Philadelphia lithography and also the authoritative book on Kollner. Map is folded into burgundy leather covers 14x8.5 with "Sidney's Map Of Ten Miles Around Philadelphia" in gilt. |

This is the extraordinary reuse of an actual Pinkerton map plate of 1809 to make a pocket map in 1852. Colton has taken the almost fifty year old Pinkerton copper plate, made some corrections to the topography (see erased lake in Florida) and added modern features such as railroads in Cuba, new settlements, and a list of Geographical Statistics in the upper right. He probably reissued it because the Pinkerton map is beautifully done and most of the basic topography remained correct. Where he got the plate is somewhat of a mystery, although it may have been obtained from successors to the Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson who issued the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas in 1818 (see our #4840). Neele and Hebert are still credited below the neat line. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Map Of The West Indies J.H. Colton" in gilt. Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

The second edition of this map, the first being 1853. Folded into stamped black covers 12.5x8.5 with "Map Of California J.H. Colton" stamped in gilt. The copyright date is 1853. This was Thomas Streeter's copy, with his note on the verso: "This is Wheat 254 who only locates it in Capron's History of California." Although the Capron version is the same map, the Capron's title differs in having the 1854 date directly under the word "California;" in this version, the date is directly under the line showing Colton as publisher with his address. There is also a "Census of California" printed on the verso. This map, updated from time to time, appeared in many editions of Colton's American Atlas, Atlas of the World, and General Atlas. In this earlier form, it was part of Colton's series of "Travelling Maps" that eventually were incorporated into his atlases. The 1853 edition has "Nevada" for Nevada City, the 1854 edition has "Nevada City." Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures. |

This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year. |

Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map. |

Wheat: "In Arizona the year 1865 was made notable by the first great map of that Territory, the 'Official Map of the Territory of Arizona...by Richard Gird'...Gird's richly varied map concentrates upon Arizona and adjacent parts of California and Sonora..." Wheat also reprints a portion of Bancroft's description of Gird's life. Streeter lists the Hartley Map of Arizona as circa 1863 and hence earlier that the Gird, Wheat disagrees, listing Hartley as 1865 (as, he claims, the Library of Congress does also), thus making the Gird the more important map: "Except that it is overshadowed by Gird's great map, Hartley's production would receive more attention here." Gird's map is full of interesting detail and is also a beautiful graphic production. Full color by county. Folded into blue patterned cloth covers 16x11 with "Gird's Official Map Of The Territory Of Arizona. A. Gensoul, Publisher." printed in gold on a black paste down label. |

This is a very late edition of this map, not listed in any of the standard references. The main map shows much new county development in the western part of the state as well as a redrawing of many of the rivers in the northwestern part and the upper end of the Rio Grande. The inset map has changed from a rectangle to an oval, still showing the Western States from the Colton U.S. map. Colton is not listed as publisher of this edition on the map, but the stamped dark brown cloth covers 16x10 say "J. De Cordova's Texas Published by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Full color. |

This is the reduced issue with slightly more coverage in the east and more progressed railroad development. The detail is, of course, less, due to the smaller scale, and the minerals are not colored in. Nonetheless it is still an excellent map of the west in its time, and is far more scarce than the larger issue of 1867. Full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 18x11.5 with "Keeler's Map Of The U.S. Territories, Pacific R.R. Routes, Mineral Lands, And Indian Reservations. 1868." stamped in gilt. |
