The second edition of this map, the first being 1853. Folded into stamped black covers 12.5x8.5 with "Map Of California J.H. Colton" stamped in gilt. The copyright date is 1853. This was Thomas Streeter's copy, with his note on the verso: "This is Wheat 254 who only locates it in Capron's History of California." Although the Capron version is the same map, the Capron's title differs in having the 1854 date directly under the word "California;" in this version, the date is directly under the line showing Colton as publisher with his address. There is also a "Census of California" printed on the verso. This map, updated from time to time, appeared in many editions of Colton's American Atlas, Atlas of the World, and General Atlas. In this earlier form, it was part of Colton's series of "Travelling Maps" that eventually were incorporated into his atlases. The 1853 edition has "Nevada" for Nevada City, the 1854 edition has "Nevada City." Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures. |

Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt. |

1st edition. Wheat: "This map, a beautiful example of the cartographer's art, is unfortunately rare and little-known...it was by far the most accurate and complete map of California and of its gold regions which had as yet been published." This copy was issued as a wall map, but it has been nicely restored, varnish removed, rebacked on paper without the rollers. The other examples I am aware of were all pocket maps. See Shumate essay on Goddard. A second edition, reduced in size, was published in 1858, and a third edition was published in 1860 (see WH copies). Map is unvarnished and without rollers. Outline color by county with a full color wash. |

There are several editions of this map: The first appears in 1862 (Wheat 1046 - "notably rare") under the title of "New Map of the State of California Exhibiting..." and copyrighted in 1861. The Nevada-Utah border in on the 116th meridian. Then in 1863, another issue appears with the same title, but dated 1863 and copyrighted in 1862. A table of distances is added above the title, and the Nevada-Utah boundary is still on the 116th meridian (Wheat 1070). The next issue is still 1863, same title, but the copyright 1863 (Streeter 2880). Then another 1863 issue with the title as above, but with "A" before "New Map..." and Nagel's name dropped (Wheat 1071 - illustrated p. 77). This issue is discussed at length by Wheat and is called "a Nevada map of first importance." There are many additions in Nevada from the prior issues - Wheat delineates them. Our copy is a variant of Wheat 1071 - there is no "A" in the title, Nagel's name is shown, and there are several erasures of town names and one mining district - Agusta Dist (just below the "V" and "A" of Nevada) had been erased as well. The Humboldt River has also been changed. It is not clear if our issue is earlier or later than the Wheat 1071. In stamped red cloth covers 16x11 with an ad for Maps, etc. on the inside cover, Adrien Gensoul's name pasted over Holt's name. Front cover stamped with "Map Of California And Nevada" in gilt. With four pages of routes and distances. This is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information in Nevada and California. Scale (ca. 1:1,750,000) not 24 miles to an in. as stated on map. |

First edition, first issue of this map. Entered in 1863 and taken from Bancroft's large Map of the Pacific States of 1864, the second edition (first issued in 1863). All of California and Nevada are shown, along with the western parts of Utah and Arizona. A companion map was issued in the same year covering the northern parts of the Pacific States map: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This is the scarcest of the editions of this map. A second issue was published in the same year, with a different border (interlocking leaves as opposed to interlocking Coltonesque metal strips in this copy), with a clean up of various names that were cut off in this first issue along the northern and eastern borders when the plate was extracted from the large map (for instance, "Painted De" for Painted Desert appears at the 35th parallel on the eastern border of Arizona in the first issue and is removed in the second issue) and different labeling of the railroads (see our 4820). To the right of the title the Colton Company name is embossed: G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. Publishers Of Maps, Atlases, Etc. 172 William Street. N.Y. Map is full color by county and folded into stamped lavender cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map Of California, Nevada, Utah And Arizona." in gilt. Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state. |

This scarce map shows a large band of central California from San Francisco Bay to Virginia City, Nevada. The showing of railroads is extensive with a separate table listing the engineers for each road. Topography is delineated in "crayon" style resulting in a very clear rendition of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The mining camps are shown in great number and the overall detail is most impressive with a 4 miles to 1 inch scale. The Whitney Survey "Map of Central California" of 1873 is the only map that we know of that is comparable, yet it is eight years later, at a scale of 6 miles to 1 inch, and runs from west to east from San Francisco Bay, thus ending at Mono Lake and missing Lake Tahoe. This 1865 map runs from southwest to northeast, covering Lake Tahoe and extending to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. We have not seen any map of central California of this period that has the clarity and detail of this map. The map was copyrighted in 1865 by Hoffmann and Poett, about whom not much is known, except that Hoffmann made a "Topographical Map of Lake Tahoe..." in 1874 with Ferdinand Von Leicht (Graff 4497), it is not clear why Bielawski was not also listed on the copyright - perhaps because he was for many years surveyor for the U.S. General Land Office in San Francisco. Haiman states that Bielawski "was considered the most important person in the Land Office, that he personally surveyed and was generally recognized as the best authority on real property titles in the state." This copy is folded into untitled brown cloth covers stamped with a decorative border. |

Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county. |

The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft & Company, 1871." |

First edition, second state. Shows mineral deposits by color. Lineal descendent of the 1869 larger map of California and Nevada by Holt, Gibbes, and others. Also shows 10, 20 and 30 mile railroad grants. This is not the first state of the first edition - that has 11 land districts instead of the 14 found on this copy (see our #5154). The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. Map is folded into red cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt. |
