Derived from the Finley 1826 American Atlas map and issued originally by Mitchell in 1831, this edition has many changes topographically and a new border. The western part of the old Arkansas Territory is now called "Indian Territory Attached to Arkansas." There are many new counties in Missouri and Arkansas, and a table of steam boat routes appear in the lower right corner of the map. The detail in the surrounding states is now filled in. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. |

Second edition. In covers with printed paper label "Map of the City of St. Louis, 1844." Engraved map, with three vignettes, two of buildings and one of a steamboat on the Mississippi River. Table of population statistics and a key to the important buildings located on the map. Color coded by ward. A beautiful map, exquisitely colored, and scarce. Rene Paul, the city surveyor, first issued this map in 1842. In 1835 Paul did a larger map of St. Louis separately and for Eugene Charles Dupre's Atlas of the City and County of St. Louis (illustrated in Ristow p.296, Karrow 9-1553-4). This earlier map was lithographed by Lehman & Duval. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 13x8 with "Map Of The City Of St. Louis, 1844" printed in black on yellow paste down label. |

Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |

1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt. |
