DeSilver, Robert

Separate Map
Authors DeSilver, Robert
Full Title Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Published by Robert DeSilver, 1827.
List No 2471.000
Note Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia.

With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Note General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt.
