Note Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

Authors Colton, J. H.
Full Title (Covers to) Topographical Map Of The West Indies And The Adjacent Coasts By John Pinkerton, Revised, Corrected and Published by J.H. Colton. No. 86 Cedar St. New York, 1853. Drawn under the direction of Mr. Pinkerton by L. Hebert. Neele sculpt. 352, Strand.
List No 2828.001
Note This is the extraordinary reuse of an actual Pinkerton map plate of 1809 to make a pocket map in 1852. Colton has taken the almost fifty year old Pinkerton copper plate, made some corrections to the topography (see erased lake in Florida) and added modern features such as railroads in Cuba, new settlements, and a list of Geographical Statistics in the upper right. He probably reissued it because the Pinkerton map is beautifully done and most of the basic topography remained correct. Where he got the plate is somewhat of a mystery, although it may have been obtained from successors to the Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson who issued the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas in 1818 (see our #4840). Neele and Hebert are still credited below the neat line. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Map Of The West Indies J.H. Colton" in gilt. Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Greenwich.

Compiled from the latest government maps and orther (sic) authentic sources. 1857. Baltimore, drawn, engraved and printed by A. Hoen & Co. and published by Jacob Monk. Entered ... 1856 by Jacob Monk ... Maryland. (with) Map of the World on Mercator's projection, exhibiting the continent of America in central position...
List No 3936.001
Note This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures.

(inset) Plan of The Southern Portion Of Florida.
List No 4813.002
Note Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

List No 5190.001
Note This is the earliest issue of this map that we have seen, earlier than any listed in Phillips or Fitzgerald. Compared to our 1876 edition (see #5040) there is far less railroad development shown on the map and the railroads are not listed to the right of the Florida Peninsula, as they are on the 1876 issue. Julius Bien is credited as engraver and printer, which is removed on the 1876 edition. There is no copyright notice. Drew's map is probably the only pocket map of Florida published in Florida in the 19th century. Not much is known about Drew - he is listed on the map as "Bookseller & Stationer" in Jacksonville. Full color by county. Map is folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Drew's New Map Of Florida" in gilt.
