Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. This is the third and last issue of this map, published in early 1880. Later in the year, Thayer changed to his version of the Bien / Roeser GLO map (see our #2810). It was first issued in 1878, with a second edition in 1879. Ellis is not fond of this map ("Too much general hachures to show mountains, very few mountain names, towns not too generously supplied, roads not clearly shown, etc.") We find it a very attractive map, however the high degree of hachuring does somewhat limit its clarity. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with purple label reading "Thayer's New Map Of The State Of Colorado. One Dollar." |
