Pocket Map
Authors Colton, J. H., Mathewson, A. J., Messinger, John, Peck, J. M.
Full Title New sectional map of the state of Illinois. Compiled from the United States surveys. Also exhibiting the internal improvements, distances between towns, villages & post offices, the outlines of prairies, woodlands, marshes & the lands donated to the state by the Gen. Govt. for the purpose of internal improvements. By J.M. Peck, John Messinger, and A.J. Mathewson. Published by J.H. Colton & Co. New-York. 1852. Engraved by S. Stiles & Co. N. York. Entered ... 1836 by J.H. Colton & Co. ... New York. (inset) Vicinity of Alton & St. Louis. (inset) Vicinity of Galena, the Lead Region and part of Wisconsin and Iowa.
List No 5030.001
Note In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington.

The first map of Milwaukee listed by Karrow is an 1836 map attributed to Lapham, then the first edition of this map in 1845. Phillips' first listing is a later edition of this map in 1857.

Chicago, Ill.
List No 3022.001
Note 1st edition, 1st year of operation for Cram's business. Everything about this map is different from Cram's later productions: it is his first year of operation, at 134 Lake Street, and the style of the cover, the map and the cartouche all have an "early" and unsophisticated look. Charles Shober is listed as Lithographer. Cram also produced the Guide Map to Chicago in 1868 (see our copy). Surviving pre fire maps by Cram are rare. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color. Map is folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 14x9 with "New Township Map Of Iowa" in gilt.

Note Froiseth's first map is actually three maps on one sheet, with a portrait of Brigham Young. Moffat lists two editions of this map, one published by the Skandinavisk Post (this copy) and another by Am. Photo-Lithographic Co., N.Y. Both editions have the Am. Photo Lithographic Co. imprint on the map however. Several copies exist unfolded (see WH's two copies) indicating that there may have been a "pile" of unfolded copies discovered recently. This copy comes from a group of three copies owned by a descendent of Froiseth, and included with our copy were several items of Froiseth memorabilia that probably have significance due to the destruction of all of Froiseth's papers soon after his death (Wheat note). Map is folded into burgundy cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Maps Of Utah Territory, Great Salt Lake Valley And Salt Lake City, With Portrait And Autograph Of Brigham Young. List No 5184.001
Note The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft & Company, 1871."

Full Title (Covers to) Map of the States Of California And Nevada. Carefully Compiled from the Latest Authentic Sources. By Chas. Drayton Gibbes, C.E. Comprising Information obtained from the U.S. Coast And Land Surveys ... And Others. Published by Warren Holt. No. 607 Clay Street, San Francisco, Cal. 1873. Entered ... 1873 by Warren Holt ... Washington. S. Blinton Formerly of the U.S. Coast Survey Draughtsman & Lithographer. 148-1/2 S. Fourth Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
List No 2479.001
Note First edition, second state. Shows mineral deposits by color. Lineal descendent of the 1869 larger map of California and Nevada by Holt, Gibbes, and others. Also shows 10, 20 and 30 mile railroad grants. This is not the first state of the first edition - that has 11 land districts instead of the 14 found on this copy (see our #5154). The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. Map is folded into red cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt.
