Pocket Map
Authors Colton, J. H., Mathewson, A. J., Messinger, John, Peck, J. M.
Full Title New sectional map of the state of Illinois. Compiled from the United States surveys. Also exhibiting the internal improvements, distances between towns, villages & post offices, the outlines of prairies, woodlands, marshes & the lands donated to the state by the Gen. Govt. for the purpose of internal improvements. By J.M. Peck, John Messinger, and A.J. Mathewson. Published by J.H. Colton & Co. New-York. 1852. Engraved by S. Stiles & Co. N. York. Entered ... 1836 by J.H. Colton & Co. ... New York. (inset) Vicinity of Alton & St. Louis. (inset) Vicinity of Galena, the Lead Region and part of Wisconsin and Iowa.
List No 5030.001
Note In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington.

Full Title J. De Cordova's Map Of The State Of Texas Compiled from the records of the General Land Office of the State by Robert Creuzbaur, Revised and Corrected by Charles W. Pressler. Published by J.H. Colton & Co. No. 172 William St. New York 1856. Engraved by J.M. Atwood, New York. Entered ... 1856 by J. De Cordova ... Texas. (with untitled inset of southwestern U.S.).
List No 3366.001
Note First edition of Pressler's revision of De Cordova's map, and first edition published by Colton. Shows Texas east of the 102nd meridian. First issued by De Cordova in 1849, with editions of 1850, 51, 53, 56, 57, 58, and 61 (Ristow and Rosenberg), and a late unlisted edition in 1867 (see our #4801). De Cordova employed Pressler to revise the map in 1855 and then sold the rights to Colton in the same year. The 1849 edition has only two copies located. Eberstadt called the 1849 issue "possibly the finest (Texas map) of the period." Colton changed the inset map from the oval showing all of Texas to the southwestern portion of Colton's U.S. atlas map. J.M. Atwood was the engraver of all editions. With a list of the Land districts, this map was useful for both land promoters and settlers. Colton published a reduced version of the map in his 1856 Atlas of the World. The full color map is folded into stamped dark maroon leather covers 16x10.5 with "J. De Cordova's Texas J.H. Colton & Co. New York." in gilt.

List No 3933.001
Note This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt.

Woolworth Colton 18 Beekman St. New York, Rufus Blanchard, Chicago, Ill. 1862. Entered ... 1861 by G. Woolworth Colton ... New York. (inset) Western Portion Of The United States. (inset) Plan of The Southern Portion Of Florida.
List No 4813.002
Note Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Note This is the reduced issue with slightly more coverage in the east and more progressed railroad development. The detail is, of course, less, due to the smaller scale, and the minerals are not colored in. Nonetheless it is still an excellent map of the west in its time, and is far more scarce than the larger issue of 1867. Full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 18x11.5 with "Keeler's Map Of The U.S. Territories, Pacific R.R. Routes, Mineral Lands, And Indian Reservations. 1868." stamped in gilt.
