This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. All of California and Nevada are shown, along with the western parts of Utah and Arizona. A companion map was issued in the same year covering the northern parts of the Pacific States map: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This is the scarcest of the editions of this map. A second issue was published in the same year, with a different border (interlocking leaves as opposed to interlocking Coltonesque metal strips in this copy), with a clean up of various names that were cut off in this first issue along the northern and eastern borders when the plate was extracted from the large map (for instance, "Painted De" for Painted Desert appears at the 35th parallel on the eastern border of Arizona in the first issue and is removed in the second issue) and different labeling of the railroads (see our 4820). This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce. |

For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers. |

Wheat: "In Arizona the year 1865 was made notable by the first great map of that Territory, the 'Official Map of the Territory of Arizona...by Richard Gird'...Gird's richly varied map concentrates upon Arizona and adjacent parts of California and Sonora..." Wheat also reprints a portion of Bancroft's description of Gird's life. Streeter lists the Hartley Map of Arizona as circa 1863 and hence earlier that the Gird, Wheat disagrees, listing Hartley as 1865 (as, he claims, the Library of Congress does also), thus making the Gird the more important map: "Except that it is overshadowed by Gird's great map, Hartley's production would receive more attention here." Gird's map is full of interesting detail and is also a beautiful graphic production. Full color by county. Compared to the 1873 edition (see our #5144) just a few counties are added, primarily in Nebraska, Kansas, and Dakota. This map was issued frequently from 1864 to 1881, the latest issue listed in Karrow. The 1874 Colton General Atlas uses the upper half of this map to show the Northwestern States and Territories, while the States and Territories of the southwest are shown on several separate maps. The General Atlases of the period from 1864 to about 1872 use the upper and lower halves of this map to show the western States and Territories. Full color by county. Folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, &c., &c. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C.Releif shown by hachures. |
