Pocket Map
Authors Colton, J. H., Mathewson, A. J., Messinger, John, Peck, J. M.
Full Title New sectional map of the state of Illinois. Compiled from the United States surveys. Also exhibiting the internal improvements, distances between towns, villages & post offices, the outlines of prairies, woodlands, marshes & the lands donated to the state by the Gen. Govt. for the purpose of internal improvements. By J.M. Peck, John Messinger, and A.J. Mathewson. Published by J.H. Colton & Co. New-York. 1852. Engraved by S. Stiles & Co. N. York. Entered ... 1836 by J.H. Colton & Co. ... New York. (inset) Vicinity of Alton & St. Louis. (inset) Vicinity of Galena, the Lead Region and part of Wisconsin and Iowa.
List No 5030.001
Note In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington.

List No 4813.002
Note Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Wheat's copy is like this one, as is the Huntington Library copy. There are no changes other than colored boundaries and the addition of New Mexico in type, between this and the 1848 edition. Note There are several editions of this map: The first appears in 1862 (Wheat 1046 - "notably rare") under the title of "New Map of the State of California Exhibiting..." and copyrighted in 1861. The Nevada-Utah border in on the 116th meridian. Then in 1863, another issue appears with the same title, but dated 1863 and copyrighted in 1862. A table of distances is added above the title, and the Nevada-Utah boundary is still on the 116th meridian (Wheat 1070). The next issue is still 1863, same title, but the copyright 1863 (Streeter 2880). Then another 1863 issue with the title as above, but with "A" before "New Map..." and Nagel's name dropped (Wheat 1071 - illustrated p. 77). This issue is discussed at length by Wheat and is called "a Nevada map of first importance." There are many additions in Nevada from the prior issues - Wheat delineates them. Our copy is a variant of Wheat 1071 - there is no "A" in the title, Nagel's name is shown, and there are several erasures of town names and one mining district - Agusta Dist (just below the "V" and "A" of Nevada) had been erased as well. The Humboldt River has also been changed. It is not clear if our issue is earlier or later than the Wheat 1071. In stamped red cloth covers 16x11 with an ad for Maps, etc. on the inside cover, Adrien Gensoul's name pasted over Holt's name. Front cover stamped with "Map Of California And Nevada" in gilt. With four pages of routes and distances. This is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information in Nevada and California. Scale (ca. 1:1,750,000) not 24 miles to an in. as stated on map.

Note General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt.

Note Wheat: "In Arizona the year 1865 was made notable by the first great map of that Territory, the 'Official Map of the Territory of Arizona...by Richard Gird'...Gird's richly varied map concentrates upon Arizona and adjacent parts of California and Sonora..." Wheat also reprints a portion of Bancroft's description of Gird's life. Streeter lists the Hartley Map of Arizona as circa 1863 and hence earlier that the Gird, Wheat disagrees, listing Hartley as 1865 (as, he claims, the Library of Congress does also), thus making the Gird the more important map: "Except that it is overshadowed by Gird's great map, Hartley's production would receive more attention here." Gird's map is full of interesting detail and is also a beautiful graphic production. Full color by county. Folded into blue patterned cloth covers 16x11 with "Gird's Official Map Of The Territory Of Arizona. A. Gensoul, Publisher." printed in gold on a black paste down label.

Note Highly detailed, important map. 1st edition 1863. This map was the "mother" map for Bancroft's several issues of the pocket map versions of the northern and southern halves of this map, as well as for many later issues of this map. It is wonderfully detailed, full of endless information on the western states, information that is found in few other maps of the same period. It differs from the 1863 edition in not having an inset map of Hawaii and in showing Montana and Idaho. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county, outlined by state.
