Note Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

Note Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Note 1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year.

Note This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt.

Note Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Note There are several editions of this map: The first appears in 1862 (Wheat 1046 - "notably rare") under the title of "New Map of the State of California Exhibiting..." and copyrighted in 1861. The Nevada-Utah border in on the 116th meridian. Then in 1863, another issue appears with the same title, but dated 1863 and copyrighted in 1862. A table of distances is added above the title, and the Nevada-Utah boundary is still on the 116th meridian (Wheat 1070). The next issue is still 1863, same title, but the copyright 1863 (Streeter 2880). Then another 1863 issue with the title as above, but with "A" before "New Map..." and Nagel's name dropped (Wheat 1071 - illustrated p. 77). This issue is discussed at length by Wheat and is called "a Nevada map of first importance." There are many additions in Nevada from the prior issues - Wheat delineates them. Our copy is a variant of Wheat 1071 - there is no "A" in the title, Nagel's name is shown, and there are several erasures of town names and one mining district - Agusta Dist (just below the "V" and "A" of Nevada) had been erased as well. The Humboldt River has also been changed. It is not clear if our issue is earlier or later than the Wheat 1071. In stamped red cloth covers 16x11 with an ad for Maps, etc. on the inside cover, Adrien Gensoul's name pasted over Holt's name. Front cover stamped with "Map Of California And Nevada" in gilt. With four pages of routes and distances. This is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information in Nevada and California. Scale (ca. 1:1,750,000) not 24 miles to an in. as stated on map.
