2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine. |

This is a very late edition of this map. The latest American Atlas edition we have seen is 1839. State one of the map is from 1823, state two is dated 1825 below the title, with an 1823 copyright statement at bottom left, state three has an 1833 date on both the map and the copyright, and this, state four, has an 1840 date on the map with an 1839 copyright statement at the bottom. In the upper right corner, the map has been extended beyond the neat line to show the developing areas of southern Wisconsin, around Mineral Point. Many new counties have been added in Missouri and Illinois. Proposed railroads are prominently displayed crisscrossing Illinois. Full color by county with the pocket map covers missing. |

Compared to the 1831 issue, three inset maps, Vicinities of Nashville, Louisville and Lexington, have been added, along with a table of stage and steamboat routes, a decorative border and many new roads and towns. A beautiful map, folded into stamped burgundy leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mitchell's Map Of Kentucky And Tennessee" in gilt. The inside front cover has a table of Population by Counties in 1840 for both states. Full color. Prime meridian is Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures. |
