A rare Spanish chart derived from the voyage of Malaspina and drawn by Felipe Bauza who accompanied Malaspina and was his chief chart maker. The track of Malaspina's ships are shown, as are the triangulation experiments of La Condamine for the measurement of a degree of meridian in 1744. We have the French edition of this chart, published in 1821. Most of the Spanish charts were published as atlases (see P4155) with different makeup, and separately. Includes Vista de la Isla Gorgona.--Vista de la Isla Sta. Clara ó Antoriajado.--Vista del Cabo Blanco.--Vista de la Silla de Payta.--Vista de la Punta Falsa de la Guja. "Longitud ocidental de Cadiz." A General Chart of the West Indies And Gulf Of Mexico, describing The Gulf and Windward Passages, Coast Of Florida, Louisiana And Mexico, Bay of Honduras and Musquito Shore, likewise the Coast Of The Spanish Main To The Mouths Of The Orinoco. Drawn from the Surveys taken by Mr. Geo. Gauld, and others, the New Spanish Charts, &c. and adjusted from recent Observations, By J. Foss Dessiou, Master of the Royal Navy. Approved by the Chart Committee of the Admiralty. London, Published by W. Faden ... Charing Cross, June 4, 1808. Engraved by J. Tyrer, Chapel St. Pentonville. (inset) Chart Of The Virgin Islands. (inset) Chart Of The Coast Of Biruquete, Panama & Veragua, From Point Solano To Point Burica. |
| List No |
4754.000 |
| Note |
With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

A separate copy of the map published in Forbes' History of Upper and Lower California. It is a lithograph, taken from the engraved edition of the map that appears in the first edition of Forbes' book. At first we thought this must be from one of the two reprints done in 1919 and 1939, but it is not. Possibly Smith Elder put out a later edition with this lithographed map but left the date the same on the title page. However, we still think it is more modern than that - we will keep looking for the source. Inset maps are titled: Sketch of Port Bodega. Harbour of San Francisco. Sketch of Puerto de S. Diego. Sketch of Monterrey Harbour. Sketch of St. Barbara Harbour. Sketch of Port S. Gabriel, or S. Pedro. Map has outline color by country. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

| Note |
With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. |

This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce. |
