Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and washington, D.C. |

Portraits of Lafayette and Franklin flank Washington (replacing Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott). "Distances in Mexico" is removed from the lower left of the map. The rest of the broadside is unchanged. 2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen. |

The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color. |

First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county. |

First edition, first issue of this map. Entered in 1863 and taken from Bancroft's large Map of the Pacific States of 1864, the second edition (first issued in 1863). All of California and Nevada are shown, along with the western parts of Utah and Arizona. A companion map was issued in the same year covering the northern parts of the Pacific States map: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This is the scarcest of the editions of this map. A second issue was published in the same year, with a different border (interlocking leaves as opposed to interlocking Coltonesque metal strips in this copy), with a clean up of various names that were cut off in this first issue along the northern and eastern borders when the plate was extracted from the large map (for instance, "Painted De" for Painted Desert appears at the 35th parallel on the eastern border of Arizona in the first issue and is removed in the second issue) and different labeling of the railroads (see our 4820). To the right of the title the Colton Company name is embossed: G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. Publishers Of Maps, Atlases, Etc. 172 William Street. N.Y. Map is full color by county and folded into stamped lavender cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map Of California, Nevada, Utah And Arizona." in gilt. Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine. |

Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county. |

Removed from Palmer's 1869 "Report of Surveys...for a route extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean." Palmer used an exact copy Keeler's 1868 reduced scale edition of his National Map of the United States without credit in this first issue although Palmer's map adds much material along the line of the proposed southern continental route, especially in the Grand Canyon, in fact, this map is best known as the first map to use the name "Grand Canyon" of the Colorado. The Kansas Pacific had dreams of extending their line to California, as shown on this map, but it never happened. The map shows the routes of the Northern Pacific, the Union and Central Pacific, and the Southern Route. Ms color red and blue lines have been drawn on the various routes, adding an additional route from Centreville, Nevada, to Portland, Oregon (probably following Dodge's proposals - see his report). The main Kansas Pacific line has at least sixteen proposed branches! There is a later issue of this map that credits Keeler as a source (see our copy). |

1st ed 1868. From Pacific States map. This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho. The litho is beginning to look tired in some places. Full color by county. Map is folded into patterned navy blue cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, And British Columbia." stamped in gilt. |
