Note House Issue, map in case. Lacks the astronomical observations that appear in the first issue by the Senate. The large map of the west is one of the most interesting and beautiful government maps of the 1840's. It filled in many of the gaps in cartographic knowledge of the west. Charles Preuss was the cartographer. Map is without color. Book is bound with full leather with "Executive Documents 2d Sess. 28th Cong." on the spine in gold.

Note Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. Buffalo are present in "inumerable bands," and it is suggested that the dung be used for fuel. Timber is scarce , except on the islands. It is noted that the Pawnee pose a threat to the traveler as they are likely to rob the emigrants along the route. A note from Fremont's report about the first viewing of the buffalo is included below the map.

Note Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

Note This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

Note Notes in this section include a mention of the Great Salt Lake as "one of the wonders of nature, and perhaps without a rival in the world..." The travelers were now out of danger from the Indians as the Snake Indians were considered to be friendly.

Note The accompanying notes state, "This is the most trying section for the traveller on the whole route. Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless."

Note This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

Note With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Note Appears to be a reissue of earlier Burr map. This map was probably published by Burr c1842 (Wilkes' track prominently displayed, Oregon boundary not settled in original map) and then used by Haven, with added insets of the RR route, and by cutting the map down the middle of Asia to put North America in the center (see dateline joint). California is colored yellow (no mention of gold other than this hint) and the Gila River boundary is drawn in red (on his copy Wheat says that California is shown as part of Mexico). See the James B. Moore map of 1850 for a similar promotion of the U.S. as the new "center" of the Europe/Asia trade, using the proposed transcontinental railroad as the link. In outline color. Note This is the Fremont/Preuss map of 1845, updated and enlarged, but only going west to the Great Salt Lake. Wheat: "the Stansbury expedition map (is) one of the most important of its decade." Wheat devotes seven pages to this map. It is a major production and is the culmination of the Fremont maps of 1843 and 1845, and the Abert map of 1846. Issued in a folder with the large Stansbury "Map of The Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country.." With outline color.
