| Note |
1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color. |

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label. |

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black. |

On the main map Iowa's western counties are filled out, Texas adds many counties in the west, and railroad growth is explosive throughout, all compared to the 1850 edition. 2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen. |

| Note |
The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color. |
