Large scale map of Oahu made eighteen years prior to the U.S. annexation in 1899. Shows detailed topography, land ownership and improvements. Written on the verso is the name of M.M. O'Shaughnessy, who, according to DAB, "was actively engaged in designing and constructing the water supply of twenty sugar plantations in Hawaii, 1899-1906, and built three aqueducts, each about ten miles long." Several ms additions on the map indicate interest in the river systems of Oahu and probably pertain to these projects. This is a scarce map of early Hawaiian development. See also O'Shaughnessy's Oahu map of 1899 and his copy of the 1906 Governor's Report. Full color. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Printed on 4 sheets. David Rumsey Collection copy mounted as one sheet, printer name cropped off. |
