(Deed from the state of New York, signed by Governor George Clinton, Granting 600 acres of land to Thomas Garrison in the township of Cincinnatus, Montgomery County). |
| List No |
4401.000 |
| Note |
An early deed with the large (9cm diameter) seal of the state attached. The State granted lands in what was designated as the Military Tract to Revolutionary War veterans. The tract comprised twenty five townships of 60,000 acres each, each consisting of 100 lots of 600 acres. Grantees received one lot. Thomas Garrison was granted lot 80 of Township 25, Cincinnatus, by this deed. In 1793, Simeon DeWitt produced a map of the Military Tract, one of his first surveys. The Military Tract was one of the first uses of Township surveys built on square lots of uniform size. Eventually, the U.S. Land Office used a 660 acre unit (1 mile square) as the building block for its surveys in Ohio and westward. Printed form filled in with pen-and-ink and including the signature of Geo. Clinton. |

Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia ceded by the States of Virginia And Maryland to the United States of America and by them established as the Seat of their Government, after the Year 1800. Rollinson sculp. N. York. Published by J. Reid L. Wayland and C. Smith 1795. |

| Note |
State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce. |

1st edition was 1800. Vail says this was the "Most important map of the Holland Land Company, published for the promotion of sale of their Western New York lands." Nestler calls it "Probably the most important map of western NY when Buffalo was still known as New Amsterdam, and when land companies were luring settlers to this new frontier." The map is highly detailed, showing every tributary of every tributary of every stream. All the township and range lines are laid down, every town located, all reservations shown and all roads indicated. One has the impression that the ground was expertly surveyed with care and diligence. The Holland land holding comprised well over three million acres, not a modest subdivision! Ellicott was the company's agent at Batavia for many years. Map is without color. |

Vance published the upper and western part of this map in 1823 (see Streeter 3818). Dey enlarged it in 1824 and 1825 by adding an eastern portion, taking the state to its eastern boundary with New England, and also adding a lower section that includes a "Geological Profile Extending from the Atlantic to Lake Erie" (which shows the Erie Canal) and four views of the complete Erie Canal. On the main map is a profile of the western and middle sections of the Erie Canal and tables of statistics and geological remarks. The whole production is a celebration of the recently completed Erie Canal. Streeter calls the 1823 issue a "fine large scale colored map." Full color by county. Map has silk edging and is dissected into 36 sections. Folds with marbled paper end sheets, and lies loosely in quarter leather marbled paper covered boards 30x17 with leather ties, "Dey's Improved Map Of N. York" is stamped in gilt on the spine. Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. With black top and bottom rollers, and light yellow cloth edging. Map is unvarnished and has blue outline color by state. |

This is the extraordinary reuse of an actual Pinkerton map plate of 1809 to make a pocket map in 1852. Colton has taken the almost fifty year old Pinkerton copper plate, made some corrections to the topography (see erased lake in Florida) and added modern features such as railroads in Cuba, new settlements, and a list of Geographical Statistics in the upper right. He probably reissued it because the Pinkerton map is beautifully done and most of the basic topography remained correct. Where he got the plate is somewhat of a mystery, although it may have been obtained from successors to the Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson who issued the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas in 1818 (see our #4840). Neele and Hebert are still credited below the neat line. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Map Of The West Indies J.H. Colton" in gilt. Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Although the Capron version is the same map, the Capron's title differs in having the 1854 date directly under the word "California;" in this version, the date is directly under the line showing Colton as publisher with his address. There is also a "Census of California" printed on the verso. This map, updated from time to time, appeared in many editions of Colton's American Atlas, Atlas of the World, and General Atlas. In this earlier form, it was part of Colton's series of "Travelling Maps" that eventually were incorporated into his atlases. A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Map is full color by state, and folded into embossed brown cloth covers 16x10 with "New Rail Road Map Of The U. States & Canada J.G. Wells" and a decorative leaf design stamped in gilt. | Note |
Relief shown by hachure. |

Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and the Mormon Temple at Salt Lake City, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850, and a Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). With black top and bottom roller. Full color by county or territory in the U.S. and by state in Central America. Edged in dark blue silk. |

Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and state symbols around an eagle, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850. Compared to the 1859 edition (our 4012.000) Colona, Jefferson, and Shoshone are added as proposed states in the west, one of the only maps we have seen to show all three. Also, the imprint of Johnson and Browning, Richmond Virginia is very unusual and probably one of the last north south publishing collaborations on the eve of the Civil War. There is Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Complains of bribery by Robert Pearsall Smith. Colton claims that he has been unable to get from the State of Illinois the statistical information he needs on Illinois counties and towns and that Smith has offered to sell him the same information that Smith obtained from Washington (by "inducements" according to Colton) for an "exorbitant price." Colton refers to himself as the "oldest and most extensive publisher of Geographical and Statistical works in this country." |

Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color. |
