Naval And Military Map Of Th …
1862
Wall Map
Authors Smith, J. Calvin, Smith, Robert P.
Full Title The New Naval And Military Map Of The United States. By J. Calvin Smith, Author Of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map Of The U.S. Travellers' Guide &c. 1862. J. Baker & Co. Publishers. J.M. Atwood, Map Engraver 517 Minor St. Philadelphia, Pa. Entered ... 1862 by Robert P. Smith ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps and 3 profiles).
List No 2262.000
Note 1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Inset showing crops and animals of the U.S. Table of distances. Table of time differences. Profiles route of Lieut. A.W. Whipple's route for Pacific Railroad.

List No 2882.000
Note 2nd edition. 1st was 1860 (NY and its Environs). Many changes from the 1860 edition - more roads, subdivisions, etc. Later editions in 1864, 1866 and 1869. This copy is the 1st edition to say "New York and its Vicinity." Extends northward from New York City 29 miles and southward 2 miles, which is shown with circles. Walling published another version of this map in 1863 (Haskell 1121) that includes all of Staten Island (this copy shows none of Staten Island) but extends north only to Englewood (see our 1860 issue of New York and Its Environs which covers the same territory). Prime meridian New York City Hall. Shows innumerable rural strudtures with owner names, water features, roads, railroads, and mileages from City Hall.

List No 4883.001
Note This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce.

Full Title General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia, Extending from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean and Between Latitude 39 degrees and 53 degrees North. Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines, and Including the Most Recent Surveys of the Topographical Bureau. Prepared by Captain John Mullan. ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E. Lithographed by J. Bien, 24 Vesey, St. N.Y.
List No 0652.001
Note Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.

Note Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county.
