Note	1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

Note	Early county map copyright by Smith. Unusual borders. This county was later remapped by J.H. French in 1859 for the French-Smith N.Y. State Map project. Apparently several of the early county maps like this one had to be redone for greater accuracy (Ristow). Inset maps include: Eaton Village, Oneida, Chittenango, Canastota, Cazenovia, Hamilton, and Morrisville. With black top and bottom rollers. Edged in green silk. Full color. Note	Merriam, Moore & Co. produced a series of dissected maps of the United States including the Eastern, Middle, Southern, Western, and New York State. The puzzle sits in a wooden case 24x17 designed to look like a book with a metal clasp to keep it shut. The title on the spine states, "Dissected Map. U.S. Merriam, Moore & Co., Troy, N.Y."

In ink on leaf : Genl [name not decipherable] from Wm M Ed[dy ]. This matches signature on Eddy's Surveryor General's Report for 1852. According to Wheat, Eddy died in March, 1854. Wheat states that map was not yet ready in March 1854 but does not give reason. However, Eddy as Surveyor General states in his report dated Dec. 15, 1853 that he has received a few copies of the map and more were soon expected. My copy is signed by Eddy on verso of cover. Original in Warren Heckrotte Collection, which is source of description and notes.

Note	Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt.
