| Note |
In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington. |

| Note |
1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Inset showing crops and animals of the U.S. Table of distances. Table of time differences. Profiles route of Lieut. A.W. Whipple's route for Pacific Railroad. |

2nd edition. 1st was 1860 (NY and its Environs). Many changes from the 1860 edition - more roads, subdivisions, etc. Later editions in 1864, 1866 and 1869. This copy is the 1st edition to say "New York and its Vicinity." Extends northward from New York City 29 miles and southward 2 miles, which is shown with circles. Walling published another version of this map in 1863 (Haskell 1121) that includes all of Staten Island (this copy shows none of Staten Island) but extends north only to Englewood (see our 1860 issue of New York and Its Environs which covers the same territory). Prime meridian New York City Hall. Shows innumerable rural strudtures with owner names, water features, roads, railroads, and mileages from City Hall. |

This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce. |
