1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21. |

First edition, to accompany the author's "British Dominions in North America." A later enlarged edition was published in New York by Sherman & Smith in 1846 (see our #5071), reprinted with additions in 1852, 1853 (no significant changes)(see NMM 479 for an atlas edition of the map, 1853). Joseph Bouchette Junior carried on his father's work and this map is a worthy successor to the elder Bouchette's 1815 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The scale is almost three times as large and the size of the map is doubled. A list of authorities is given, all Canadian, ending with "several important American Authorities" (which are unnamed). Lands belonging to the Canada Company are shown. There is a great deal of detail in the U.S. portions of the map, and attention is paid to the Maine boundary dispute with a note - but only the British claim line is shown. Outline color by state. Map has green cloth edging and is dissected into 35 sections. Folds with blue paper end sheets into a new gray cloth folding case 28x21.5 with "Upper And Lower Canada J. Bouchette, Jr. 1831" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold. |

| Note |
In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington. |

With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed. |

This is the extraordinary reuse of an actual Pinkerton map plate of 1809 to make a pocket map in 1852. Colton has taken the almost fifty year old Pinkerton copper plate, made some corrections to the topography (see erased lake in Florida) and added modern features such as railroads in Cuba, new settlements, and a list of Geographical Statistics in the upper right. He probably reissued it because the Pinkerton map is beautifully done and most of the basic topography remained correct. Where he got the plate is somewhat of a mystery, although it may have been obtained from successors to the Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson who issued the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas in 1818 (see our #4840). Neele and Hebert are still credited below the neat line. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Map Of The West Indies J.H. Colton" in gilt. Full color. Relief shown by hachures. The second edition of this map, the first being 1853. Folded into stamped black covers 12.5x8.5 with "Map Of California J.H. Colton" stamped in gilt. The copyright date is 1853. This was Thomas Streeter's copy, with his note on the verso: "This is Wheat 254 who only locates it in Capron's History of California." Although the Capron version is the same map, the Capron's title differs in having the 1854 date directly under the word "California;" in this version, the date is directly under the line showing Colton as publisher with his address. There is also a "Census of California" printed on the verso. This map, updated from time to time, appeared in many editions of Colton's American Atlas, Atlas of the World, and General Atlas. In this earlier form, it was part of Colton's series of "Travelling Maps" that eventually were incorporated into his atlases. The 1853 edition has "Nevada" for Nevada City, the 1854 edition has "Nevada City." Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures. |

Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt. |
