| Note |
First edition, to accompany the author's "British Dominions in North America." A later enlarged edition was published in New York by Sherman & Smith in 1846 (see our #5071), reprinted with additions in 1852, 1853 (no significant changes)(see NMM 479 for an atlas edition of the map, 1853). Joseph Bouchette Junior carried on his father's work and this map is a worthy successor to the elder Bouchette's 1815 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The scale is almost three times as large and the size of the map is doubled. A list of authorities is given, all Canadian, ending with "several important American Authorities" (which are unnamed). Lands belonging to the Canada Company are shown. There is a great deal of detail in the U.S. portions of the map, and attention is paid to the Maine boundary dispute with a note - but only the British claim line is shown. Outline color by state. Map has green cloth edging and is dissected into 35 sections. Folds with blue paper end sheets into a new gray cloth folding case 28x21.5 with "Upper And Lower Canada J. Bouchette, Jr. 1831" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold. |

One of the earliest, and most important government maps of the Great Salt Lake area. Wheat calls this map "a major production...for the Great Salt Lake itself the map was definitive...Scientific cartography for the Territory of Utah may be said to date from the appearance of this map." It is a stunning map, large in scope, and clearly shows the genius of Charles Preuss as a cartographer. Issued in a folder with the large Stansbury "Map of a Reconnoissance between Fort Leavenworth..." Bodies of water have light blue outline color. |

See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada) |

The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington. |

This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. Calvin Smith 1852" stamped in gold on the spine. |

This is the extraordinary reuse of an actual Pinkerton map plate of 1809 to make a pocket map in 1852. Colton has taken the almost fifty year old Pinkerton copper plate, made some corrections to the topography (see erased lake in Florida) and added modern features such as railroads in Cuba, new settlements, and a list of Geographical Statistics in the upper right. He probably reissued it because the Pinkerton map is beautifully done and most of the basic topography remained correct. Where he got the plate is somewhat of a mystery, although it may have been obtained from successors to the Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson who issued the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas in 1818 (see our #4840). Neele and Hebert are still credited below the neat line. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Map Of The West Indies J.H. Colton" in gilt. Full color. Relief shown by hachures. 16" pair of Terrestrial and Celestial globes. These globes were originally issued by Copley and sold by Blunt in New York in 1852. Joslin revised and reissued them (this pair) in 1869, continuing until the 1890's (Warner). These are both floor stand models and are illustrated in Joslin's catalogue of the early 1870's (see our copy). Franklin Globes also issued the Copley Globes, but they may have been made by Joslin or Nims for Franklin (Warner). "National Park" is shown in the U.S. where Yellowstone Park was created in 1872, but we think this is anticipatory rather than after the fact. The "corrected to 1870" was usually done a year or two before the date (Coffeen). The Copley globes are beautifully executed, have a "modern" look, and are "extremely detailed, even to the point of obscurity" (Warner). Warner further states that "no examples of the Joslin 1869 state of these globes are known." This pair may be the only survivors. Copley won a gold medal in 1852 from the American Institute for the globes (see Transactions of the American Institute 1852, p124-5). Warner lists a Franklin 16" Terrestrial (3-88) by Nims that is similar to this. Total height from base to top is 43 inches. |
