Note First accurate map to show the gold discoveries. In President Polk's Message to Congress, December 5, 1848, House Executive Document No.1, 30th Congress, Second Session. Wheat calls this "Most important of all the maps of 1848...of paramount importance in any cartographical consideration of the gold rush." See also Mason's two maps published with his report in the same volume. Relief shown by hachures.

List No 4835.001
Note Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

Note See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada)

Accompanied by a Map of California and adjacent Country.
List No 3438.001
Note Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt.

Note Unlike the earlier 1857 ed., this shows "Proposed Arizonia Territory" in Gadsden Purchase, adds Coos, Douglas and Jackson counties in Oregon, as well as Carson and Humboldt, etc. in Nevada, and several additional counties in Arizona and New Mexico, and adds an "explanation." Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Shows Indian tribes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

Note 1st edition. Wheat: "This map, a beautiful example of the cartographer's art, is unfortunately rare and little-known...it was by far the most accurate and complete map of California and of its gold regions which had as yet been published." This copy was issued as a wall map, but it has been nicely restored, varnish removed, rebacked on paper without the rollers. The other examples I am aware of were all pocket maps. See Shumate essay on Goddard. A second edition, reduced in size, was published in 1858, and a third edition was published in 1860 (see WH copies). Map is unvarnished and without rollers. Outline color by county with a full color wash.

List No 3484.001
Note The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover.

Full Title (Covers) The royal atlas of modern geography, exhibiting, in a series of entirely original and authentic maps, the present condition of geographical discovery and research in the several countries, empires, and states of the world by Alexander Keith Johnston ... With a special index to each map. William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London. MDCCCLXI.
List No 0373A
Note First edition. This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. The North America map shows Colorado as a Territory - very up to date on U.S. political changes (most U.S. atlases do not show Colorado until 1862) for an English Atlas. Also shows Nevada, and a horizontal Arizona. However, the western U.S. map shows none of this -- its layout is pre-1860. Maps have a mixture of hand colored outline and printed blue color for water. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Keith Johnston's royal atlas of modern geography" stamped in gilt on the cover, and "The Royal Atlas. Keith Johnston. W. Blackwood & Sons" on the spine.
