The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover. |

South 2 sheets of 4, top 2 sheets never issued, thus complete. Two unmounted sheets on heavy paper. Never folded. Hoffmann was the principal topographer. Wheat says the Northwest sheet was issued, does not mention the northeast being issued. WH says the two northern sheets were issued with areas left unsurveyed, he doubts that they were ever mounted on linen and colored. So the bottom two in this issue can be considered "complete". Vogdes lists the date as 1872 (and elsewhere as 1873!). We think 1873 is correct. Vogdes says sheet II, northeast sheet, was issued in 1872, he also dates sheet III and IV as 1872, and sheet III as having an 1871 issue (Fitch had a copy of this 1871 sheet III issue on thin paper, folded into covers, Cat. 41). There is a note on the map reading "The portion of Nevada included between the parallels ... taken from the work of the 40th Parallel Survey in charge of Clarence King, by permission of Genl. A.A. Humphreys, Chief of Engineers." Outline color by county. |

Magnificent, huge atlas showing the area of the 40th Parallel Survey in topographical and geological maps. Wheat notes: "These are pioneer survey maps, and as such are most interesting. Mapping the West in so broad a cross-section had never before been attempted, a portent of things to come." King, at the age of 25, was made Geologist-in-charge of the Survey in 1867. He was formally ordered "to examine and describe the geological structure, geographical condition and natural resources of a belt of country extending from the 120th meridian eastward to the 105th meridian, along the 40th parallel of latitude with sufficient expansion north and south to include the lines of 'Central' and 'Union Pacific' railroads..." (Wheat). The topographical sheets depict features by brush shading rather than hachuring. In original binding -rare. Bound in green half leather with a label on the front, "Geological and Topographical Atlas Accompanying the Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. Clarence King, Geologist in Charge." |
