Note	This is an unusual survivor - in about 1854 someone cut out the Northwestern one third of John Melish's large Map of the United States (1823 edition) and updated it to show the states, territories and proposed territories of that period, notably Kansas and Nebraska but no Gadsden Purchase, and Shoshone and Dakota (which are usually seen on circa 1858-59 maps). The new boundaries are hand colored with white past down labels for names of states and territories. It might have been used as a school map in the west - we found it in a small town in the California gold country. This portion is dissected into 15 sections mounted on linen with silk edging, and folds down to 23x15.

Note	Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. Buffalo are present in "inumerable bands," and it is suggested that the dung be used for fuel. Timber is scarce , except on the islands. It is noted that the Pawnee pose a threat to the traveler as they are likely to rob the emigrants along the route. A note from Fremont's report about the first viewing of the buffalo is included below the map.

Note	Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

Note	Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Note	First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Note	A large promotional map of an early Iowa river town. See Andrea Iowa Atlas, page 402 for the early history of Clinton. The Iowa Land Company speculated that the railroad crossing of the Mississippi would occur at Clinton's site and thus bring many settlers to the area. The Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad was formed in 1856 (Andreas) and the bridge, tracks and roundhouse are shown on the map, probably prospectively. This map was most likely used for promotion of land sales. Without color. Showing tract names and lot numbers.

Note	A promotional plat map for a city that never "got off the ground" (or map). At the top of the plat for the city is a park-like reserve titled "Golden Spring Reserve" and there is a vignette of an Indian sitting next to the Golden Spring. Central Bluffs does not appear on any other maps of the period, except for a very small settlement called "Golden Spring P.O." which shows in the Nebraska State atlas of 1885 - apparently the city never happened and the hapless early lot buyers became Golden Springs. The promotion was probably based on the expectation of a major railroad crossing the Missouri from Iowa and heading west (shown as the Nebraska Central Railroad and the Lyons and Iowa Central Railroad on the inset map) right through the proposed town. This route shows briefly in the late 1850's maps, then disappears, another railroad promotion that did not happen. And so went the city of Central Bluffs. Nearby and closer to the Missouri, a Central City appears briefly on some maps of the period, then also disappears. It may be related to this development. Map is without color.

Note	An important early guide to the Colorado Gold Region, with three Colton maps on two sheets: "Kansas and Nebraska...1859," which is taken from the 1858 General Atlas, minus the upper half of Nebraska - shows eastern Kansas and Nebraska, "Nebraska and Kanzas, Showing Pikes Peak And The Gold Region...1859," which is the lower half of the 1857 General Atlas map of the same title (without the reference to the Gold Region), and "Military Map of Parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Dakota by Lieut. G.K. Warren Top. Engrs. from the Explorations made by him in 1855, 56 & 57... J.H. Colton... New York," which is derived from the lower half of Warren's 1858/1859 "Military Map of Nebraska and Dakota" (see our #2932). The "Nebraska and Kanzas, Showing Pikes Peak..." map appeared as the only map in J.W. Reed's 1859 "Map of and Guide to the Kansas Gold Region (WC343a), also published by J.H. Colton. Bound in brown linen 15x10, with "Guide to Kansas, The Pike's Peak Gold Region &c. &c. J.H. Colton New York" in gold on the cover. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
