The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana." |

Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W." |

As a consequence, it was scanned at 800 PPI providing four times the resolution of the typical detailed map scan of 400 PPI. At least ten separate symbols for special buildings were utilized, a method enhanced by placing an abbreviation next to the symbol. Structures with special symbols include: churches, chapels, monuments, windmills, water mills, stamp mills, forester's lodges, watchtowers, ruins, forts, quarries, clay pits, lime kilns, and coke-ovens. Factories, brick works, powder magazines electric power plants, and many other important buildings are differentiated by means of abbreviation. Houses appear as black blocks, either rectangular or shaped like the ground plan of the building. Many other features are differentiated, for example there are four different qualities of roads plus bridle paths and footpaths. Vegetation is minutely classified including separate symbols for broadleaf trees, evergreens, underbrush, heather, dry meadows, wet meadows, swamps, orchards, gardens, vineyards, and parks. Relief is shown by hachures. Spot elevations are given in meters above sea level. |
