| Note |
A rare advertisement for Jefferys' publications and products. The date is estimated. It is interesting that this does not emphasize the maps as much as the prints, reflecting the fact that he had a large business at this time as a general engraver. Apparently, he published this trade card to "mark his arrival in the Strand" (Harley, Imago Mundi XX), and to announce the opening of his new premises there. Card uncolored. |

| List No |
4401.000 |
| Note |
An early deed with the large (9cm diameter) seal of the state attached. The State granted lands in what was designated as the Military Tract to Revolutionary War veterans. The tract comprised twenty five townships of 60,000 acres each, each consisting of 100 lots of 600 acres. Grantees received one lot. Thomas Garrison was granted lot 80 of Township 25, Cincinnatus, by this deed. In 1793, Simeon DeWitt produced a map of the Military Tract, one of his first surveys. The Military Tract was one of the first uses of Township surveys built on square lots of uniform size. Eventually, the U.S. Land Office used a 660 acre unit (1 mile square) as the building block for its surveys in Ohio and westward. Printed form filled in with pen-and-ink and including the signature of Geo. Clinton. |

1st edition was 1800. Vail says this was the "Most important map of the Holland Land Company, published for the promotion of sale of their Western New York lands." Nestler calls it "Probably the most important map of western NY when Buffalo was still known as New Amsterdam, and when land companies were luring settlers to this new frontier." The map is highly detailed, showing every tributary of every tributary of every stream. All the township and range lines are laid down, every town located, all reservations shown and all roads indicated. One has the impression that the ground was expertly surveyed with care and diligence. The Holland land holding comprised well over three million acres, not a modest subdivision! Ellicott was the company's agent at Batavia for many years. Map is without color. |

Vance published the upper and western part of this map in 1823 (see Streeter 3818). Dey enlarged it in 1824 and 1825 by adding an eastern portion, taking the state to its eastern boundary with New England, and also adding a lower section that includes a "Geological Profile Extending from the Atlantic to Lake Erie" (which shows the Erie Canal) and four views of the complete Erie Canal. On the main map is a profile of the western and middle sections of the Erie Canal and tables of statistics and geological remarks. The whole production is a celebration of the recently completed Erie Canal. Streeter calls the 1823 issue a "fine large scale colored map." Full color by county. Map has silk edging and is dissected into 36 sections. Folds with marbled paper end sheets, and lies loosely in quarter leather marbled paper covered boards 30x17 with leather ties, "Dey's Improved Map Of N. York" is stamped in gilt on the spine. Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Complains of bribery by Robert Pearsall Smith. Colton claims that he has been unable to get from the State of Illinois the statistical information he needs on Illinois counties and towns and that Smith has offered to sell him the same information that Smith obtained from Washington (by "inducements" according to Colton) for an "exorbitant price." Colton refers to himself as the "oldest and most extensive publisher of Geographical and Statistical works in this country." |

| Note |
This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. This is the reduced issue with slightly more coverage in the east and more progressed railroad development. The detail is, of course, less, due to the smaller scale, and the minerals are not colored in. Nonetheless it is still an excellent map of the west in its time, and is far more scarce than the larger issue of 1867. Full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 18x11.5 with "Keeler's Map Of The U.S. Territories, Pacific R.R. Routes, Mineral Lands, And Indian Reservations. 1868." stamped in gilt. |

| Note |
This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color. |
