The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. This shows the eastern U.S. to the 98th meridian, and is the companion to Colton's 1864 "Map Of The States And Territories West Of The Mississippi River..." (see our #2928). Both maps come from Johnson's "New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our #4012). This eastern map was also issued under other titles (see our #4812) and was the source of several of the maps in Colton's Octavo Atlas of The Union (see our #2526). Full color by state. It is folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with the title "Colton's Travelers' Map Of The United States, Showing The Counties, Railroads, &c G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co" stamped in gold. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Ewlief shown by hachures. |

This is the most ambitious Coloney & Fairchild strip or ribbon map: it shows the Mississippi River from its delta to its source at Lake Itaska, a distance of 2600 miles. It is backed on linen and rolls into paper covered spool with a hand crank. This is the revised edition, with much additional material added on river towns by William Bowen, President of the Pilot's Association of St. Louis (this information comes from the promotion for this map printed on the Ribbon Map of New York City). No record of the first issue found, although a copy exists at the Minnesota Historical Society. The river is colored blue against a black and white background. Distances from New Orleans are printed on the river at intervals to the source. Karrow's listing is for a variant: the map printed in five strips on one sheet and folded into the 1866 edition of Edward's Gazetteer of the Mississippi River. Scarce. |
