| Full Title |
Map Of The Gold Regions Of California, Showing the Routes via Chagres and Panama, Cape Horn, &c. ... Published by Ensigns & Thayer, 50 Ann Street New-York. (with untitled inset map of North and South America). |
| List No |
3442.000 |
| Note |
With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. |

This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce. |

This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt. |

This, the 1864 Johnson and Ward version represents a complete re-engraving of the 1862-1863 map. Johnson added considerable detail in the mountainous regions of California, Nevada and Colorado. Copyright 1864. The first separate map of West Virginia listed in Phillips. No other references found - precedes the two West Virginia oil maps listed in Streeter (3919, 3924). Folded originally, now flat. Virginia is shown as East Virginia. Shows Oil Works, Iron Mines, Coal Mines, as well as several manuscript notions on the location of coal and oil deposits. An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. Tooley also lists a map of Texas by this same Richardson, 1860 - we believe this is incorrect - the Texas map was by Willard Richardson (see Day, Maps of Texas). Scarce. |

Huge, large scale map of one of the early and important coal regions of West Virginia. Land owners' holdings are shown in color with dates of original patents (George Washington had large holdings here). Six sections show the amount and kinds of coal found at different parts of the valley. An inset map of West Virginia shows the current and future water and rail connections between the Kanawha Valley and Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Several columns of text describe the geography, climate, and types of coal to be found. The sheer amount of information is impressive. This must be one of the best coal mining maps of its time, if not the largest. Map folds into embossed dark brown cloth covers 22x15 with "Title Map Of The Great Kanawha Coal Field. John S. Swann." in gilt. |

17 maps and plates as called for in Vol III, p.vii of text. Huge folio atlas with 2 plates of views, 2 facsimiles (Carrigain 1816 and Holland 1784), 1 diagram or Camera view, a 6 sheet Geological Map of the state, a 5 (of 6, as issued) sheet Map of the state's Surface Geology, and a map of the Ammonoosuc Mining District. The upper northwest sheet of the Surface Geology map was not printed because it is entirely of Vermont, except for a tiny part of the lower right corner which was covered by making the uppper northeast sheet about one inch wider in the Surface Geology issue than it is in the Geological (six sheet) issue. The matter is further confused by Sabin calling for 16 plates and Phillips and LeGear calling for 9. Cobb calls for 17 and the most important list, in the text of the report itself, calls for 17. We believe this was the only large folio Geological Atlas made of an eastern state, on the scale of the western survey atlases of Powell, Hayden, Wheeler and King, during the same period. Most maps have printed color although the Ammonoosuc Mining District map is fully hand colored. |
