A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post. |

Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This copy came from a group of about ten copies found with the J.D. Graham papers. Without color. Scarce. Relief shown by hachures. |

Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. As a consequence, it was scanned at 800 PPI providing four times the resolution of the typical detailed map scan of 400 PPI. At least ten separate symbols for special buildings were utilized, a method enhanced by placing an abbreviation next to the symbol. Structures with special symbols include: churches, chapels, monuments, windmills, water mills, stamp mills, forester's lodges, watchtowers, ruins, forts, quarries, clay pits, lime kilns, and coke-ovens. Factories, brick works, powder magazines electric power plants, and many other important buildings are differentiated by means of abbreviation. Houses appear as black blocks, either rectangular or shaped like the ground plan of the building. Many other features are differentiated, for example there are four different qualities of roads plus bridle paths and footpaths. Vegetation is minutely classified including separate symbols for broadleaf trees, evergreens, underbrush, heather, dry meadows, wet meadows, swamps, orchards, gardens, vineyards, and parks.
