A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure. |

The first map of Mexican War issued by Mitchell and one of the earliest separately published map of the conflict. It shows the area between Monterey and the Rio Grande, with two inset maps, one of the battlefield at Monterey and the other showing the general area of Mexico and Texas. There is a printed note: "The Publisher has in preparation and will issue on the 10th of November, 1846, a Map of Mexico (including the States of Yucatan & Upper California) the size & price of which will be the same as the present map." Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This is a very early delineation of the Gold discoveries on the Clearwater River and other areas of the Northwest. Evans dates his notations April 1, 1861. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. The largest map is the Complete Map of the Rail Roads..., which shows the eastern United States with all the railroads in operations and projected. This is a Civil War map in its focus, and typically Magnus in its packing together several maps and views.
