A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure. |

The first map of Mexican War issued by Mitchell and one of the earliest separately published map of the conflict. It shows the area between Monterey and the Rio Grande, with two inset maps, one of the battlefield at Monterey and the other showing the general area of Mexico and Texas. There is a printed note: "The Publisher has in preparation and will issue on the 10th of November, 1846, a Map of Mexico (including the States of Yucatan & Upper California) the size & price of which will be the same as the present map." Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This is a very early delineation of the Gold discoveries on the Clearwater River and other areas of the Northwest. Evans dates his notations April 1, 1861. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W." |

Another edition, not listed, adds soldiers to the left and right of the main map, illustrating Hardee's tactics (of fighting). A pasted down sheet in the bottom margin explains the color coding and gives population statistics for the three regions. There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Stanford also sold this map under his imprint. Full color. Dissected into 32 sections.
