From the Carey & Lea 1822 and 1823 American Atlas editions. Comparison to Carey and Lea edition of 1822: most of the state maps are similar, except Georgia, Louisiana, New York adds information on Canadian coast of Lake Erie, U.S. map adds Long's information in the west and labels the Great American Desert (in the 1822 edition Carey & Lea used Long's information on Map 35, but only slightly on the U.S. map, as they explain in their note on the U.S. Map), Phillips points out some of the other differences -- N. America shows Russian America and a Map of Russian America reflects the treaty of 1825, Mexico is different, Guatemala is added, Guadeloupe and Martinique are substituted for the Windward and Leeward Islands Maps, maps of Guyana and Paraguay are added in S. America. In general, some of the United States maps are taken from the 1822 and early 1823 editions (for example, Illinois and Indiana are from the 1822/23) and some are from the later 1823/26 edition (the U.S. and Louisiana, for example). Full color. Covers are new half leather mauve marbled paper covered boards with "Buchon. Atlas des Deux Ameriques" stamped on the spine in gold. |

Maps dated 1822-1842. Shows Texas as Republic. Shows some of the Jedediah Smith information on the N. America and Mexico maps. See Wheat 403 & 404, and 413 & 420. Wheat seems to miss the Picquet Mexico map in his discussion, although he lists it in the cartobibliography. The Mexico atlas map is dated 1840 and is a combination of the J. Arrowsmith British N. America 1837, the larger Brue 1834 Mexico map and the 1833 Brue Map of North America. Phillips shows an 1834 edition and an 1839 edition of the atlas. Both have the Mexico map dated 1825. Bancroft has a Mexico dated 1825 with Picquet's stamp dated 1835 - this map does not have the new Arrowsmith/Smith information. Thus we think this 1840 Mexico is the first to be changed since the original 1825 edition. The Brue Mexico 1834 large map, and U.S. 1836 large map with inset of Oregon both, and especially the Mexico map, have Smith information. Picquet engraved both maps, yet it took him five years or so to put the Smith information on the Mexico map in this atlas. The maps are hand painted with both outline and full color, and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with a green paper label printed with the title "Atlas universel de geographie ancienne et moderne ..." The leather spine is embossed with "Brue. Atlas de geographie ancienne et moderne" in gold. |

First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Includes index to maps. First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Outline color. Bound in patterned paper covered boards with dark blue cloth spine with "Lange Atlas von Nord-amerika" stamped in gold. |
