Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt. |

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black. |

It is beautifully designed and drawn, and includes a large number of the mining towns, though it cannot be entirely commended for accuracy." A portion of this map was published as Gibbes' New Map of the Gold Region in California, 1851, which was also issued in the Stockton Directory and Emigrant's Guide to the Southern Mines, Stockton, 1852 (Rocq 12978). Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |

See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders.
