Note The five maps which accompany Pike's report are of great importance, especially the two maps of Louisiana which Wheat calls "maps of outstanding historic interest... beautifully drawn." Pike's map of New Spain was copied from Humboldt's manuscript map, although Humboldt did not publish his map until 1811. All maps uncolored and bound into the back of the book. Bowen, Frances
Title Page: General atlas.
1810
Manuscript Map
Authors Bowen, Frances
Full Title (Title Page to) A general atlas done by Frances Bowen under the care of her sister Eliza in the year 1810.
List No 4871B
Note 37 manuscript maps of the world, done by a young lady, Frances Bowen, as part of a geographical exercise. The result is very fine -- these are some of the most delicate and well executed children's maps we have seen. The paper is watermarked J. Whatman 1808 and E & P 1804, both English watermarks, hence the assumption of English origin (furthermore the meridian is from London on the World and U.S. maps) although it could be American. There is a double page map of the World, another of the Mediterranean, maps of all the continents and countries of Europe and Asia, and maps of the United States, North America, West Indies, and South America. Rebound with marbled paper boards and quarter leather with "General Atlas, Frances Bowen - 1810" on the spine.
