World Atlas
Authors Moll, Herman, d. 1732
Full Title (Covers to) Atlas minor: or a new and curious set of sixty-two maps, in which are shewn all the empires, kingdoms, countries, states, in all the known parts of the earth, with their bounds, divisions, chief cities & towns, the whole composed & laid down agreable to modern history. By Herman Moll, Geographer. (3rd ed.) London, Printed for Thos. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard & John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill (1736?)
List No 5580A
Note Contains 62 hand col. double-page engraved maps (10 folding). Contemporary ink inscription on front blank endpaper. Newer full polished calf with original gilt-lettered red leather label. A few minor repairs. The Atlas Minor was first published in 1729 and reprinted in 1732. This ed. has new engraved title-page with contents and revised maps. The maps in the third ed. are similar to those of the 2nd, except that a number of the American maps contain added place names. Like most of Moll's works, the majority of the maps are undated, although the maps of Great Tartary (no. 32) and "The West Part of Barbary" (no. 41) are dated 1732. The deciding factor which makes this copy the 3rd. ed. is map no. 13 (Germany) which carries the added legend, "Lorrain was ceded to France A.D. 1736 ..." Includes 29 maps of Europe, 10 of Asia, 5 of Africa and 18 of the Americas, including the double-hemisphere world map (no. 1) and the map of America (no. 45) that show California as an island. The Rumsey Collection copy includes 17 extra inserted, uncolored, undated maps (13 folding, 2 manuscript), 7 of which deal with the West Coast of Africa, and 2 of which are manuscript maps of the harbors at Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, the mouth of the Amazon River and Straits of Magellan, all with captions and place names in French, 3 others are of Upper and Lower Canada. The 17 maps appear to have been taken from several later 18th century sources, and were probably extracted from Kitchen's Pocket Atlas, Child's Universal Traveller, the English ed. of Du Halde's Description of China, and other works. A folded world map shows George Anson's tract on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1740-1744, and is probably from one of the numerous eds. of his Voyage. Includes folded descriptions from John Howell Books and the Argonaut Book Shop.

Note This is the second edition and the source of the White Gallaher and White map of Mexico issued in 1828, which was reissued by Disturnell in 1846. See our 1846 and 1847 issues of this Tanner map. This copy, although having several areas of loss, is significant in being the personal copy of Anthony Dey, one of the three principals of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It is not signed by Dey, but was found with many of his personal papers including documents relating to the Company (see our #5177). On the map, the lands owned by the Company are outlined in manuscript. The Company controled a vast area of land in southeastern Texas and was one of the earliest to offer lands for sale to colonists - several of its promotional materials are listed in Streeter Texas. Outline color by state. Map is folded into red leather covers 15x8.5 stamped with "Mexico." in gold.

Note 3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). See our 1847, fifth edition, #5158. Full color map, folded into dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Tanner's Travelling Map Of Mexico" stamped in gilt.

Gen Kearny's route from Ft. Leavenworth to Santa Fe is shown and labeled, along with other routes of battle (unlabeled) running from Texas south to La Puebla, Mexico. Note This is a very attractive and scarce atlas by a cartographer from Naples. Not in Phillips or British Museum. Marzolla prints extensive notes with his maps, listing his cartographic sources and giving political and statistical information on the areas covered. No title page (probably issued that way) and with a manuscript list of contents. The map of "Nuova California" is based on the Hypolite Ferry map of 1850 and is discussed by Wheat. The maps are dated from 1840 to 1856. Outline color. The covers are brown paper covered boards with a leather spine embossed with "Marzolla. Atlante geografico. G.B." in gilt.
