Separate Map
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron
Full Title Plan of the Operations of the British & Ottoman Forces in Egypt, From the 8th of March to the 2d. of Septr. 1801, when the French were Finally expelled from that Country. Composed from materials furnished by the Quarter Master Generals Department. London, Published by A. Arrowsmith, 1st. September 1802 No. 24 Rathbone Place. Engraved by S.J. Neele 352 Strand. (inset) Plate 1: (Alexandria peninsula on an enlarged scale.)
List No 0029.000
Note S.J.Neele is the engraver. This copy was probably removed from a book, however, it was published separately and is in Arrowsmith's catalogue. How many battle maps did Arrowsmith do? This may be one of only a few. See Map Collector 9, p22 for Arrowsmith catalogue showing this map with the Egypt maps. No other battle plans listed. Map in full color with battle positions in red and yellow. Relief shown by hachures. Upper right corner: plate 2.

Chart Map
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron
Full Title Chart Of The West Indies And Spanish Dominions In North America. By A. Arrowsmith, 1803. Jones Smith & Co. sc. Beaufort Buildgs. Strand. London Published June 1st 1803 by A. Arrowsmith No. 24 Rathbone Place. To Admiral John Willett Payne, A distinguished Native of the West Indies ... This Chart is respectfully Dedicated by his most obedient Servt. A. Arrowsmith.
List No 4121.000
Note The first edition, including Mexico to the Pacific, and with the dedication to Admiral John Willett Payne. In four sheets. Countries are outlined in color. The 1810 second and later editions only extend to the east coast of Mexico, presumably because Arrowsmith published his large map of Mexico in 1810. In its coverage of Mexico and Central America, this map is the largest scale and most accurate map of those areas published to date, preceding Pike's and Humboldt's maps by several years. It seems odd that Humboldt would criticize Arrowsmith for copying his map of New Spain, when Arrowsmith produced his own map (this West Indies Map) which included substantial portions of Mexico several years before Humboldt's map was issued. There are many differences between this map's rendering of Mexico and the 1810 Map of Mexico - the later map has more and better detail, but the earlier rendition is still impressive. Stevens and Tree only list two editions, 1803 and 1810, but Phillips lists an 1811 (P-Maps) and an 1816 (atlases). There probably were others.

World Atlas
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Lewis, Samuel
Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Published by John Conrad & Co., Philadelphia, M. & J. Conrad & Co., Baltimore, Rapin, Conrad & Co., Washington City, Somervell & Conrad, Petersburg, Bonsal, Conrad & Co., Norfolk. 1804.
List No 2436B
Note First edition. This atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, one of the first such collaborations (and one of the few -- only David Burr and John Arrowsmith, and Henry Rogers and Keith Johnston come to mind). The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). Phillips shows editions of 1804, 1805, 1812, and 1819. Uncolored maps bound into marble paper-covered boards with half leather.

De La Perouse, On the Coast of Tartary, Together With every other Improvement collected from Various Navigators and Travellers to the present time. London: Made & Sold by J. & W. Cary, Strand, March 1st, 1816. With Corrections and Additions to 1818.
List No 3401.000
Note Dated March 1st, 1816, With Corrections and Additions to 1818. 2nd edition, 1st edition was either 1816 or 1817 depending on the authority. Uses Arrowsmith for the American Northwest. Cary issued globes in 3.5", 9", 12" and 21" sizes starting in 1792 (Fordham) and added the 18" in 1816/17. During this period he issued the globes with his brother William, later with his brother George. The globe is beautifully drawn with precision in a style similar to Cary's maps, lacking any ornamentation. The stand is a four leg table type, with horizon ring. An 18-inch globe, measuring 25-inches from base to tip.

Paris, Goujon, 6, Rue De Bac. Simmoneau, 6, Rue De La Paix. Berlin, S. Schropp & Co. Dresden, E. Arnold ...
List No 4755.000
Note With 48 inch spheres, this may be one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800's. Arrowsmith's Map of the World on a Globular Projection had 36 inch spheres and was last published in 1814. Gardner's map is fairly up to date in the American Northwest, less so in the plains area. He probably used Wyld's and Arrowsmith's maps of North America as sources. Not in Phillips or Wheat. British Museum World catalog lists this edition and an 1837 edition. The drawing and engraving of this map is very elegant and spare. In eight sheets, dissected into 6 sections each, and mounted on linen with dark green silk edging. Outline color. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 36x23 with "Western And Eastern Hemispheres J. Gardner 1825" stamped in gold on the spine.

Full Title Fredonia Or The United States of North America, Including Also Cabotia, Or The Canadian Provinces, The Western Territory To The Pacific Ocean, And the Northern Part of the Mexican States. 14th August, 1830. Additions 1833.
List No 3827.001
Note The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map.
