2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine. |

Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21. |

Issued to accompany the author's "British Dominions..." of 1832. In the preface, referring to this map and the map of Quebec, Bouchette states "In the general frame work of the maps of Lower Canada, which are upon a large and explanatory scale, the author was materially aided by his previous topographical exhibit of that province, published in 1815...but the details are entirely new and compiled, with the greatest care, from numerous original surveys and documents of indubitable authenticity, that have enabled him to lay down every minutia of topography." And on the last page of volume one, the maps are stated to be "hitherto unequaled for local precision." Essentially, this map of Montreal District and the sister map of Quebec are of the same large scale of the 1815 Map of Lower Canada, but actually enlarge the area of coverage (the mother map was already over ten feet long) to a combined length of over fifteen feet, all with massive updating to show the growth of settlement and survey. The Montreal map also emphasizes the Rideau Canal with a large inset map and by adding that portion of Upper Canada through with the canal passes (the text refers to the canal as Canada's equivalent of the Erie Canal). Another remarkable production by Bouchette. Map has outline color and is dissected into 33 sections. Folds with marbled end sheets into a half leather marbled paper covered slip case 35x23.5 with "Montreal" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. With black top and bottom rollers, and light yellow cloth edging. Map is unvarnished and has blue outline color by state. |

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place. |
