| Full Title |
(Covers to) Map Of The Northern Part of the State Of New York. Compiled from actual Survey By Amos Lay 1812. Entered ... 16th day of July 1812 by Amos Lay ... New-York. |
| List No |
2293A |
| Note |
2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine. |

2941.000 |
| Note |
A large promotional map of an early Iowa river town. See Andrea Iowa Atlas, page 402 for the early history of Clinton. The Iowa Land Company speculated that the railroad crossing of the Mississippi would occur at Clinton's site and thus bring many settlers to the area. The Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad was formed in 1856 (Andreas) and the bridge, tracks and roundhouse are shown on the map, probably prospectively. This map was most likely used for promotion of land sales. Without color. Showing tract names and lot numbers. |

St. Louis, Mo. Second Carondelet Avenue betw. Lafayette & Geier Avs. S.W. from City Hospital. (Inset Map) Topographical Sketch of a Portion of Nebraska Territory. |
| List No |
4084.000 |
| Note |
A promotional plat map for a city that never "got off the ground" (or map). At the top of the plat for the city is a park-like reserve titled "Golden Spring Reserve" and there is a vignette of an Indian sitting next to the Golden Spring. Central Bluffs does not appear on any other maps of the period, except for a very small settlement called "Golden Spring P.O." which shows in the Nebraska State atlas of 1885 - apparently the city never happened and the hapless early lot buyers became Golden Springs. The promotion was probably based on the expectation of a major railroad crossing the Missouri from Iowa and heading west (shown as the Nebraska Central Railroad and the Lyons and Iowa Central Railroad on the inset map) right through the proposed town. This route shows briefly in the late 1850's maps, then disappears, another railroad promotion that did not happen. And so went the city of Central Bluffs. Nearby and closer to the Missouri, a Central City appears briefly on some maps of the period, then also disappears. It may be related to this development. Map is without color. |

Scarce and early land sale map with a very early issue of Britton & Co.'s "Map of the City of San Francisco" and below it on the same sheet a larger "Map of the Beideman Tract..." Beideman owned several large parcels of land in the emerging areas of the city and this tract was one of the earliest to be sold in the newly annexed Western Addition. The Britton & Co. Map of San Francisco is the earliest issue that we have seen, followed by several issues in 1863 to 1867 by Gensoul and the San Francisco Municipal Reports and the San Francisco Directory (see our copies under Gensoul). The Norris catalog lists an 1859 Map of Hayes Tract also by M. Hoadley with lots to be sold at auction by H.A. Cobb, but the San Francisco map is not printed above the Hayes Tract map. One of the earliest San Francisco land sales maps. Covers area bounded by Laguna, Bush, Larkin and McAllister streets. Casastral map. |

Land sale promotion. Map shows railroad lands in red. Probably made specially by Colton for the railroad - this is not the atlas map (it is larger) and it has the simplicity of a railroad map - it shows the stations along the route which is delineated by a thick black line. The text promotes the wonders of Illinois for farming. Explanatory remarks includes Illinois population 1840-1860, School fund, and Central land sale. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

Large scale map of Oahu made eighteen years prior to the U.S. annexation in 1899. Shows detailed topography, land ownership and improvements. Written on the verso is the name of M.M. O'Shaughnessy, who, according to DAB, "was actively engaged in designing and constructing the water supply of twenty sugar plantations in Hawaii, 1899-1906, and built three aqueducts, each about ten miles long." Several ms additions on the map indicate interest in the river systems of Oahu and probably pertain to these projects. This is a scarce map of early Hawaiian development. See also O'Shaughnessy's Oahu map of 1899 and his copy of the 1906 Governor's Report. Full color. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Printed on 4 sheets.
