List No 4638A
Note This is a later edition of DeLisle's maps, including some maps by Sanson, Jaillot and others, first published by Covens and Mortier in 1730. It is bound with a geography text by Sanson. This issue did not included the abbreviated edition of Popple's map that appears in the P596 copy and the index does not call for it. The maps are beautifully done, following the original DeLisle plates closely. This copy does not have the plan of Carthagene called for in the index, and it does not appear to have been bound in originally (there is a ms line drawn through the index line referring to this map that may have been done at the time of issue). Koeman's C&M 6 is slightly different from our copy: it has 1733 on the title page and 1741 on the index (our copy has 1742 on the index and no date on the title page, also, C&M 6 lists 107 maps on the index - this one lists 108 maps with one crossed out (see above) - that map crossed out was published in 1741 or 42 and probably was not yet ready for inclusion. So our copy was unknown to Koeman or Phillips. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "DeLisle Atlas" stamped in gilt on the new spine. Maps are hand painted with outline color.

London, R. Laurie & J. Whittle, 1804)
List No 2310B
Note 60 maps on 76 sheets, lacks title page, has index. Maps dated 1794-1804. Many of the maps are updated from Kitchin's 36 sheet General Atlas, and the American Atlas. In 1796 and 1800 Laurie and Whittle published their New and Elegant Imperial Sheet Atlas (P6009, 6016), with 50 maps all, we believe on a single sheet, with a different map of the U.S. showing the American Flag above the cartouche. The Universal Atlas was their biggest production, with many of the maps multi sheet. Outline color. Atlas is bound in new quarter leather orange cloth covered boards with a red leather label on the spine stamped with "Atlas. Laurie. Whittle." in gilt.

The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). List No 1657C
Note Pasted onto cutout in center of sheet. The 1st ed., with a list of subscribers. This is a fine atlas, one of the best of its period, and a source for American mapmakers (Tanner directly copied the World and continental maps for his New American Atlas). Fordham: (The maps) "are finely engraved, with full details, showing especially the water-ways and roads, and hill-shading, and are usually coloured. The work is very clear and delicate and of a uniform character throughout." Authors Carey, Mathew, Warner, Benjamin
Full Title (Covers to) A General Atlas, Being A Collection Of Maps Of The World And Quarters, Their Principal Empires, Kingdoms, &c. Containing Fifty Eight Maps And Charts. Philadelphia: Published By M. Carey, And B. Warner. 1816.
List No 4864.001
Note Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included. An earlier edition was published in 1814 (Yale) by Carey with Johnson and Warner, with the same title page as this 1816 edition and with 58 maps (according to Yale's catalog - not seen by us). An 1818 edition was published with 52 maps in the title and index. Yale's copy of the 1816 edition lists 52 maps in the title and index. So this title may be an uncorrected state. The maps in this atlas result from a collaboration between Carey and Warner, using maps from their prior publications, unchanged: maps 1-4, 30-49, and 52 are from the 1809 edition of Guthrie's Geographical Grammar, Philadelphia, by Johnson and Warner (our 0316.000), maps 5-8 are from the 1812 (late) edition of Brooke's Gazetteer, Philadelphia, Johnson and Warner (our 3807.000), maps 9-29 are from the 1814 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, Philadelphia, Mathew Carey (our 2276.000), maps 50 and 51 (Turkey in Asia and Islands of the East Indies) are from an unknown American source and are copies of Wilkinson maps. Carey's maps are of separate states of the United States while Warner's maps cover the general American maps (including 5-8, which are relatively scarce general maps of Eastern States, Middle and Western States, Southern States, and North Western Territories) and maps of the rest of the World. In 1802 and 1810 Carey published Carey's Minor American Atlas (P11022, 11023) which was about the same size as this atlas, with only 19 and 20, respectively, American maps - essentially the American Pocket Atlas with maps bound unfolded and without text. He took this format and enlarged it to a world atlas by using Warner's maps. This was probably published in a small edition and was an attempt to serve the market with a cheaper and smaller version of the folio General Atlas. This atlas is not listed in any of the references, we am aware of only four copies (Baskes, Yale (2), and this one) although there may

Full Title (Title Page to) A General Atlas, Being A Collection Of Maps Of The World And Quarters, Their Principal Empires, Kingdoms, &c. Containing Fifty Eight Maps And Charts. Philadelphia: Published By M. Carey, And B. Warner. 1816.
List No 4864.002
Note Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included.
