Authors Tanner, Henry S.
Full Title (Covers and Title Page to) United States of America: by H.S. Tanner, 1839. Philadelphia, Published by Henry S. Tanner. Entered ... 1838, by H.S. Tanner ... Pennsylvania. Engraved by H.S. Tanner, assisted by E.B. Dawson, W. Allen & J. Knight. (title by) J.W. Steel Sc. (with 17 inset maps and 1 profile). (with index) An alphabetical index to the four sheet map of the United States by H. S. Tanner. Philadelphia: Rackliff and Jones, Printers, South-West Corner of George and Swanwick streets.
List No 4845A
Note Covers to map, and cover and title page of index. The seventh edition. Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839."

List No 2301B
Note The first Cerographic Atlas of the United States. Originally Issued in three parts starting in 1842 and ending in 1845 (although Woodward states that it cannot be determined how many parts were issued, our copy indicates three parts), This copy is the 1845 edition, which is a reissue of the 1842 - 1845 edition with some changes to the maps and the addition of color. Library of Congress copy (Phillips, 1228) and this copy have no Oregon map and no separate map of Iowa, as issued. When the atlas was issued in parts (Phillips, 1383) there was an Oregon map and an Iowa map listed. However, this 1845 ed. adds 6 maps not in the 1st ed.: North America, Canada east, Canada west, Nova Scotia - New Brunswick &c., West India Islands, and Wisconsin Southern Part. Printed in full color. Bound in half leather floral textured brown cloth covered boards, titled "Morse's North American Atlas" in gilt.

World Atlas
Authors Greenleaf, Jeremiah
Full Title (Contents to) A New Universal Atlas, Comprising Separate Maps Of all the Principal Empires, Kingdoms & States Throughout the World: and forming a distinct Atlas Of The United States. Carefully Compiled from the best Authorities Extant by Jeremiah Greenleaf. a new edition revised and corrected to the present time. 1848.
List No 2866C
Note Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold. Spine reads "Atlas". Marbled lining.

Note This was clearly inspired by the Andreas Atlases of Iowa and Minnesota - it has much the same format, and is equally well executed. Ristow describes the sad fate of this atlas - Walling and Tackabury published their Atlas of the State of Wisconsin in 1876 (P2633) which greatly reduced the market and thus fewer than 5000 copies of this 1878 atlas were sold, resulting in heavy financial loss and the exhaustion and ultimate demise of Mr. Snyder. H.R. Page acquired the plates and published another expanded edition in 1881 called the Illustrated Historical atlas of Wisconsin (P5079). Atlas is bound in half leather black cloth covered boards with "Illustrated historical atlas of Wisconsin" stamped in gold on the front cover and blind stamped on the back, the spine reads "Historical atlas of Wisconsin. Authors Ryker, Harrison
Full Title (Index Map to) Location of Aerial Photos (drawn onto: Map of the City and County of San Francisco prepared by the Department of Public Works. John L. Casey, City Engineer. 1937).
List No 5852.165
Note Index map to a set of 164 spectacular, large format, sharp, black and white vertical aerial photography partially overlapping images covering San Francisco north of a line approximately between Merced Lake and Candlestick Point. Resolution generally better than one foot and much higher with high contrast features, for example the paint striping on a basketball court. Relative heights frequently discernible based on shadow cast of objects and structures. Handwritten date on index map indicates photographs taken in August, 1938. Owned by the San Francisco Public Library. (Authorship almost certainly incorrectly spelled in handwriting on index sheet as Harrison-Rikker). He married Charlotte Seward in the mid-1920s, after divorcing, he married Esther Miriam Munson in 1936 Aerial Photographer Harrison Clay (Chesley) Ryker (1898-1981) was born in Oakdale, CA. . He served in the U.S. Army for several years in Germany with the post-World War I occupational forces, and partook of educational opportunities at the University of California, Berkeley. Expanding on his hobby in photography, Mr. Ryker teamed with various pilots beginning aerial photography services out of the Oakland Airport and throughout the West. Colleagues included Lage Wernstedt of the U.S. Forest Service. He also worked with the Fairchild Aerial Camera Company (including an aerial survey of Puerto Rico) and Clyde Sunderland of Pacific Aerial Surveys. As well, he took photographs of the devastating 1923 Berkeley Fire, archived in The Bancroft Library. By 1938 Mr. Ryker was listed in business as a map publisher (see Polk's Oakland 1938 Street and Avenue Guide) based at 1924 Franklin St., Oakland. At that time, he had at least one patent pending for a stereoscope used for aerial photograph interpretation. (Note continued in Pub Note field below).
