60 maps on 76 sheets, lacks title page, has index. Maps dated 1794-1804. Many of the maps are updated from Kitchin's 36 sheet General Atlas, and the American Atlas. In 1796 and 1800 Laurie and Whittle published their New and Elegant Imperial Sheet Atlas (P6009, 6016), with 50 maps all, we believe on a single sheet, with a different map of the U.S. showing the American Flag above the cartouche. The Universal Atlas was their biggest production, with many of the maps multi sheet. Outline color. Atlas is bound in new quarter leather orange cloth covered boards with a red leather label on the spine stamped with "Atlas. Laurie. Whittle." in gilt. |

| Note |
This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas, the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory, and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. Karpinski 94 incorrectly dates this map as "certainly as late as 1824" while mentioning that Phillips dates it 1819 (?). We cannot find the Phillips entry, but we bel |

| Note |
This is the first edition (and perhaps the only edition). The title calls for ten maps, but there are actually 11 maps, one U.S. map and ten state maps. Each state map (actually, groups of states) is accompanied by an index sheet of places on the map. The state maps appear in the 1825 Universal atlas by Morse (see our #3812) where some of the maps are updated. Pasted on the cover is a slip with a lovely engraving of a globe with "Morse's new atlas of the United States on an improved plan..." on it. Scarce. |

Burr. New York, published by David H. Burr. 1829. Engravd. by Rawdon, Clark & Co. Albany & Rawdon, Wright & Co., New York. |

| Note |
This atlas is the second atlas published in the 19th century of one of the individual states in the U.S., preceded only by Mill's Atlas of South Carolina, issued in 1825, and followed closely, also in 1829, by Greenleaf's Atlas of the State of Maine (Ristow, p96). This copy is the 1st edition, second state, actually published in 1832. Howard Welsh rescued this copy which was obviously about to be broken up and disbound. When we acquired it from his estate it was completely disbound, subsequently we had it rebound and restored. The Map of the City and County of New York is dated 2nd. ed., 1832, Haskell 725 lists this as appearing in the 1829 ed. of the Atlas. Therefore, we can presume that there are two 1829 eds., the first state with this map dated 1829 (Haskell 721) and the second state which is this copy with the 1832 map (Haskell 725). The Map of New York State is also dated 1832. All other maps are dated 1829. Full hand painted color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "New York Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

| Note |
The first edition, with no date on the title page and the copyright dates on the maps running from 1831 to 1835. This issue is probably earlier than the LOC copy - the LOC copy has most of the pages numbered, while this copy has only a few pages numbered (and the numbers there are do not always correspond to the index numbers). Ristow states that Burr completed only eight of the 63 maps by 1832 and was then unable to complete the project because of his appointment to the U.S. Post Office as topographer, the atlas was completed by Illman and Pilbrow and issued in 1835. Burr is given credit on the title page, and the entire group of maps is in his "style" so we can assume he played at least a supervisory role in the production of the remaining maps. This copy is all original with half leather brown cloth covered boards and gilt stamped title "The Universal Atlas" on the front board, and tissue between each map. Full color. |
