Note This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

List No 3484.001
Note The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover.

Bien, 24 Vesey, St. N.Y.
List No 0652.001
Note Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.

Note Highly detailed, important map. 1st edition 1863. This map was the "mother" map for Bancroft's several issues of the pocket map versions of the northern and southern halves of this map, as well as for many later issues of this map. It is wonderfully detailed, full of endless information on the western states, information that is found in few other maps of the same period. It differs from the 1863 edition in not having an inset map of Hawaii and in showing Montana and Idaho. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county, outlined by state.

Note 1st ed 1868. From Pacific States map. This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho. The litho is beginning to look tired in some places. Full color by county. Map is folded into patterned navy blue cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, And British Columbia." stamped in gilt.
