Note Notes in this section include a mention of the Great Salt Lake as "one of the wonders of nature, and perhaps without a rival in the world..." The travelers were now out of danger from the Indians as the Snake Indians were considered to be friendly.

Note The accompanying notes state, "This is the most trying section for the traveller on the whole route. Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless."

Note This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

Authors DeGroot, Henry, Holt, Warren
Full Title DeGroot's Map Of Nevada Territory Exhibiting A Portion Of Southern Oregon & Eastern California With County Boundaries, Mining Districts, Railroad Routes, Wagon Roads, Table Of Distances, &c. &c. Published By Warren Holt, 305 Montgomery St. San Francisco, Cal. 1863. Entered ... 1862 by Warren Holt ... California.
List No 3453.000
Note Very scarce detailed map of the early Nevada Territory. Wheat: "DeGroot's 'Nevada' of 1863 is truly an impressive performance...cartographical pioneering of the first order." Wheat believed that the map may have actually been published in 1862 (the date of its copyright) but dated 1863 to be up to date, because it shows the eastern boundary of Nevada at the 116th meridian instead of the 115th which was made the boundary in July of 1862. Much is shown in Nevada, but also in western California, Southern Oregon (the Owyhee is "unexplored") and a small corner of Washington Territory (now Idaho). According to Wheat, DeGroot had extensive first hand knowledge of the entire area and the map displays this with great clarity. What is unusual about this map is its sense of accuracy - it looks like nothing has been put in that the author was not sure of - much like Arrowsmith's maps of the early 1800's. W.H. has the Howell copy with DeGroot's printed Guide to the map mentioned by Wheat and Wagner Camp, probably the only copy of the map existing with the guide, and the only copy of the guide. Map is in full color by county.

Note First edition, first issue of this map. Entered in 1863 and taken from Bancroft's large Map of the Pacific States of 1864, the second edition (first issued in 1863). All of California and Nevada are shown, along with the western parts of Utah and Arizona. A companion map was issued in the same year covering the northern parts of the Pacific States map: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This is the scarcest of the editions of this map. A second issue was published in the same year, with a different border (interlocking leaves as opposed to interlocking Coltonesque metal strips in this copy), with a clean up of various names that were cut off in this first issue along the northern and eastern borders when the plate was extracted from the large map (for instance, "Painted De" for Painted Desert appears at the 35th parallel on the eastern border of Arizona in the first issue and is removed in the second issue) and different labeling of the railroads (see our 4820). To the right of the title the Colton Company name is embossed: G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. Publishers Of Maps, Atlases, Etc. 172 William Street. N.Y. Map is full color by county and folded into stamped lavender cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map Of California, Nevada, Utah And Arizona." in gilt. Bien, 24 Vesey, St. N.Y.
List No 0652.001
Note Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.

List No 3440.000
Note Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county.

The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78.
